Column Holding Fixture
Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:
• | Unnecessary SIR system repairs |
In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
• | Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring. |
• | If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System. |
- Disable the inflatable
restraint steering wheel module coil. Refer to
Disabling the SIR System
in SIR.
- Remove the steering wheel from the column. Refer to
Steering Wheel Replacement
.
- Remove the steering column from the vehicle. Refer to
Steering Column Replacement
.
- Set the steering column and J 41352
into a vise.
- Align the block tooth on the race and upper shaft assembly to
the 12 o'clock position.
- Place the ignition switch in the LOCK position to center the inflatable
restraint steering wheel module coil.
Remove only those components necessary to do the repairs.
- Check the steering column for any accident damage. Refer to
Steering Column Accident Damage Inspection - Off Vehicle
.
- Remove the wire harness assembly strap (1).
- Remove the retaining ring
from the steering shaft assembly.
- Remove the wire harness
straps and the wire protector from the steering column.
- Disconnect the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil
connector at the base of the steering column, if needed.
- Remove the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil from
the steering shaft assembly.
- Attach mechanics wire to the inflatable restraint steering wheel
module coil connectors for reassembly.
- Pull the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil connectors
through the steering column, if necessary.
