Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 208376  Size: SH
  1. Disconnect the upper oil cooler line fitting at the radiator.
  2. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.

  3. Object Number: 208321  Size: SH
  4. Disconnect the lower oil cooler line fitting at the radiator.
  5. Remove the propeller shaft. Refer to One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement or Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  6. Remove the rear axle torque arm. Refer to Torque Arm Replacement in Rear Suspension.
  7. Remove the catalytic converter hanger.
  8. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
  9. Remove the transmission support. Refer to Transmission Support Replacement in Frame and Underbody.
  10. Lower the transmission jack slightly. This will allow access to the oil cooler fittings on the transmission.
  11. Pull the plastic cap back from the quick connect fitting and down along the cooler line about 50 mm (2 in).

  13. Using a bent-tip screwdriver, pull on one of the ends of the E-clip until the clip is out of position and can be completely removed.
  14. Remove the E-clip from the quick connect fitting.
  15. Discard the E-clip.

  17. Pull the cooler line straight out from the quick connect fitting.

  19. On the 3.8 L remove the oil cooler pipes from the clip at the engine mount.

  21. On the 5.7 L remove the oil cooler pipes from the clip at the oil pan.
  22. Remove the cooler lines from the vehicle.

  24. On the 5.7 L remove the oil cooler lines from the clip at the generator bracket.

Installation Procedure

Important: Do not reuse any of the existing E-clips that were removed from the existing quick connect fittings. All clips being installed must be new.

  1. Install a new E-clip into the quick connect fitting.
  2. Hook one of the open ends of the E-clips in one of the slots in the quick connect fitting.

  3. Object Number: 104746  Size: SH
  4. Rotate the E-clip around the fitting until the clip is positioned with all three ears through the three slots on the fitting.

  5. Object Number: 104741  Size: SH
  6. Do not install the new E-clip onto the fitting by pushing the clip straight down.
  7. Ensure that the three retaining ring ears are seen from inside the fitting and that the retaining ring moves freely in the fitting slots.

    Notice: Ensure that the cooler line being installed has a plastic cap on each end that connects to a quick connect fitting. If no plastic cap exists, or the plastic cap is damaged, obtain a new plastic cap and position on to the cooler line prior to the cooler line installation.

  9. Install the transmission oil cooler line to the vehicle.
  10. Insert the cooler line end into the quick connect fitting until a click is either heard or felt.

  12. On the 5.7 L install the oil cooler lines to the clip at the generator bracket.

  14. On the 5.7 L install the oil cooler pipes to the clip at the oil pan.

  16. On the 3.8 L install the oil cooler pipes to the clip at the engine mount.

  17. Object Number: 104750  Size: SH
  18. Do not use the plastic cap on the cooler line in order to install the cooler line into the fitting.

  19. Object Number: 104753  Size: SH
  20. Position (snap) the plastic cap onto the fitting. Do not manually depress the retaining ring when installing the plastic cap onto the quick connect fitting.
  21. Ensure that the plastic cap is fully seated against the fitting.
  22. Important: If you cannot position the plastic cap against the fitting, remove the retaining ring from the quick connect fitting per Step 5 of the cooler line removal procedure. Check the retaining ring and the tube end in order to ensure neither is bent. Replace the cooler line or the retaining ring if necessary, and reinstall per Step 2 of the cooler line installation procedure.

  23. Pull back sharply on the cooler line in order to ensure that the cooler line is fastened into the quick connect fitting.

  25. Ensure that no gap is present between the cap and the fitting.
  26. Raise the transmission jack.
  27. Install the transmission support. Refer to Transmission Support Replacement in Frame and Underbody.
  28. Remove the transmission jack.
  29. Install the catalytic converter hanger.
  30. Install the rear axle torque arm. Refer to Torque Arm Replacement in Rear Suspension.
  31. Install the propeller shaft. Refer to One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement or Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.

  32. Object Number: 208321  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  33. Connect the lower oil cooler line fitting to the radiator.
  34. Tighten
    Tighten the lower oil cooler line fitting to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  35. Lower the vehicle.

  37. Connect the upper oil cooler pipe fitting to the radiator.
  38. Tighten
    Tighten the upper oil cooler pipe fitting to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  39. Fill the transmission to the proper level with DEXRON® III transmission fluid. Refer to Transmission Fluid Check .
