BAT. RUNS DOWN/GENERATOR HIGH (REPLACE FUSIBLE LINK)

CONDITION:

ON SOME 1988-90 B CARS THE BATTERY MAY RUN DOWN OR THE GENERATOR MAY HAVE HIGH OR NO OUTPUT. REPLACING THE ABOVE COMPONENTS WILL NOT CORRECT THE CONDITION.

CAUSE:

THE FUSIBLE LINK TO THE GENERATOR, LOCATED BY THE STARTER, MAY BE INTERNALLY CORRODED. THE CORROSION OCCURS INSIDE THE BLACK BARREL PORTION OF THE FUSIBLE LINK. THE CORROSION MAY NOT BE VISIBLE TO THE EYE, BUT CAN BE FOUND BY PULLING ON THE WIRE.

CORRECTION:

REPLACE THE FUSIBLE LINK FOLLOWING THE DIRECTIONS IN THE SERVICE MANUAL, SECTION 8A. COAT THE NEW FUSIBLE LINK WITH A SEALER OR HEAT-SHRINK TUBING, TO AVOID ANY FUTURE CORROSION.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
