Condition: Some customers may comment about difficulty opening the front doors on 1991 Caprice vehicles built prior to the following VIN breakpoints:
Willow Run MW199117 Arlington MR105732
when using the inside door handles.
Cause: The inside handle rod may have come out of the retaining clip on the lock module, or the retaining clip may have broken.
Correction: Replace the retaining clip with new clip, P/N 20557650, using the following procedure.
Part is currently available from GMSPO.
1. Remove the door trim panel as described in the Body Section of the Service Manual.
2. Loosen the inner panel water deflector.
3. Disconnect the locking and the handle rods from the retaining clip on the lock module.
4. Rotate the clip 90 degrees and remove from the module.
5. Install the new clip, P/N 20557650 by locating in the slot and rotating 90 degrees.
6. Reinstall the rods into the clip.
7. Operate the system to ensure a satisfactory repair.
8. Reposition the inner panel water deflector.
9. Reinstall the door trim panel.
