REAR AXLE ABS SENSOR RING REPLACEMENT (NEW SENSOR RING)

Subject: REAR AXLE ABS SENSOR RING REPLACEMENT

Model and Year: 1991 CAPRICE

TO: ALL CHEVROLET DEALERS

When servicing the rear axle drive pinion, it may be necessary to remove the ABS sensor ring which may effect the original press fit dimensions and tolerances. This could result in false speed signals due to sensor ring slippage. (See Figure 1)

In order to maintain original press fit dimensions and tolerances whenever the sensor ring is removed, a new sensor ring must be installed.

Identify the rear axle in question by locating the axle code stamped on the axle tube (See Figure 2). Using the obtained axle code, cross reference for the appropriate replacement sensor ring part number (See Table 1).

Reference Section 4B of the Service Manual for removal and installation procedures. Also, note in the Service Manual that additional information is available referencing this Service Bulletin.

Parts are currently available from GMSPO.

Use applicable labor code and time. (F2383)

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
