CAMPAIGN: TIE ROD CLAMP BOLTS LOOSE (UNEVEN TIRE WEAR)

Subject: PRODUCT CAMPAIGN 92C22 TIE ROD CLAMP BOLTS LOOSE

Model and Year: 1991-92 CHEVROLET CAPRICE (ARLINGTON ONLY)

General motors has determined that certain 1991-92 Chevrolet Caprice model vehicles built at the Arlington Assembly Plant may have been shipped without having the four (4) tie rod adjusting sleeve clamp bolts/nuts tightened. This condition could result in uneven tire wear.

To correct this condition, dealers are to inspect tie rod nut torques on involved vehicles and those vehicles with tie rod nuts torqued below specification will have the tie rod assemblies replaced.

VEHICLES INVOLVED

Involved are the following 1991-92 Chevrolet Caprice model vehicles built at the Arlington Assembly Plant:

Involved vehicles have been identified by Vehicle Identification Number Computer Listings. Computer listings contain the complete Vehicle Identification Number, owner name and address data, and are furnished to involved dealers with the campaign bulletin. Owner name and address data furnished will enable dealers to follow-up with owners involved in this campaign.

These listings may contain owner names and addresses obtained from State Motor Vehicle Registration Records. The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any other purpose is a violation of law in several states. Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this listing to the follow-up necessary to complete this campaign.

OWNER NOTIFICATION

Owners will be notified of this campaign on their vehicles by Chevrolet Motor Division (see copy of owner letter included with this bulletin).

DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY

All unsold new vehicles in dealers' possession and subject to this campaign must be held and inspected/repaired per the service procedure of this campaign bulletin before owners take possession of these vehicles.

Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this campaign at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.

owners of vehicles recently sold from your new vehicle inventory are to be contacted by the dealer, and arrangements made to make the required correction according to instructions contained in this bulletin.

In summary, whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign enters your vehicle inventory, or is in your dealership for service in the future, please take the steps necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made before selling or releasing the vehicle.

PARTS INFORMATION

NOTICE: NO PARTS ARE REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THIS CAMPAIGN UNLESS THE TIE ROD NUTS ARE LOOSE.

If parts are required to complete this campaign they are to be obtained from General Motors Service Parts Operations (GMSPO). To ensure these parts will be obtained as soon as possible, they should be ordered from GMSPO on a "C.I.O." order with no special instruction code, but on an advise code (2).

If tie rod nuts are loose, all of parts below will be required to perform this campaign. IT IS ANTICIPATED THAT N0 VEHICLES WILL REQUIRE TIE ROD ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT. DO NOT ORDER THE PARTS LISTED BELOW UNLESS A VEHICLE EXHIBITS LOOSE TIE ROD NUTS.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Raise and suitably support vehicle. Refer to General Information (Sec. 0A) of applicable Service Manual.

2. Grasp adjusting tube/sleeve of adjustable tie rod assembly with one hand and attempt to rotate tube/sleeve clamps with opposite hand (see figure below).

3. Repeat step 2 on adjustable tie rod assembly on opposite side of vehicle.

4. If a tie rod adjusting tube/sleeve clamp is found to be loose, proceed to step 5. If no looseness is found, no further action is required, proceed to step 6.

5. Replace inner and outer tie rod assemblies and required connecting and attaching components following applicable Service Manual procedures in the Steering Linkage Section (Sec. 3B3). Perform procedure on both sides of vehicle including toe-in adjustment.

6. Install Campaign Identification Label.

CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL

Each vehicle corrected in accordance with the instructions outlined in this Product Campaign Bulletin will require a "Campaign Identification Label." Each label provides a space to include the campaign number and the five (5) digit dealer code of the dealer performing the campaign service. This information may be inserted with a typewriter or a ball point pen.

Each "Campaign Identification Label" is to be located on the radiator core support in an area which will be visible when the vehicle is brought in for periodic servicing by the owner. Additional "Campaign Identification Labels" can be obtained from DAC.

Apply "Campaign Identification Label" only on a clean, dry surface.

Submit a Product Campaign Claim with the information indicated below:

* Campaign Administrative Allowance.

** The "Parts Allowance" should be the sum total of the current GMSPO Dealer Net price plus 30% of all parts required for the repair.

*** Labor Time for this operation (V7371) includes time for-removal of locking wheel covers and performing the toe-in adjustment.

Dealers will automatically receive the correct labor and material allowance based on the labor operation performed.

Dear Chevrolet Caprice owner:

This notice is sent to inform you that Chevrolet Motor Division is conducting a recall campaign that includes your vehicle.

REASON FOR THIS RECALL

General Motors has determined that certain 1991-92 Chevrolet Caprice model vehicles built at the Arlington Assembly Plant may have been shipped without having the four (4) tie rod adjusting sleeve clamp bolts/nuts tightened. This condition could result in uneven tire wear.

WHAT WE WILL DO

To correct this condition, your dealer will inspect the tie rod bolt/nut torques on your Caprice and if the tie rod bolt/nuts have been under-torqued the tie rod assemblies will be replaced.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO

Please contact your Chevrolet dealer as soon as possible to arrange a service date. Instructions for making this correction have been sent to your dealer. Please ask your dealer if you wish to know how much time will be needed to schedule and process your vehicle.

The enclosed owner reply card identifies your vehicle. Presentation of this card to your dealer will assist in making the necessary correction in the shortest possible time. If you have sold or traded your vehicle, please let us know by completing the postage paid reply card and returning it to us.
