POTENTIAL WATER LEAKS RIGHT SIDE OF COWL

Model and Year: 1991 CAPRICE

THIS BULLETIN CANCELS AND SUPERSEDES DEALER SERVICE BULLETIN NO. 91-11-10, DATED APRIL 1990. A PARAGRAPH ON MATERIALS REQUIRED HAS BEEN ADDED. ALL COPIES OF 91-11-10 SHOULD BE DISCARDED.

Application:

1991 Chevrolet Caprice (Prior to VIN MW119411).

Condition:

Water entry into vehicle on right side of cowl - wet carpet, musty odors and/or potential damage to Electronic Control Module (E.C.M.).

IMPORTANT:

If vehicle is being serviced for E.C.M. damage, the wiper transmission access hole cover should be sealed using the following procedure and materials.

Cause:

Gaps in sealing of the wiper transmission access hole cover (located under the right side air inlet grille panel).

Correction:

Apply additional sealing around the outside edge of the wiper transmission access hole cover using the following materials and procedure (See Illustration).

MATERIALS:

3M # 08648 (Black, 12 oz. cartridge) Joint and Seam Sealer, American/Dominion Sure

Seal # CSB (Black, 12 oz. cartridge) or equivalent.

Procedure:

NOTICE: WHEN REMOVING THE AIR INLET GRILLE PANELS, ALWAYS REMOVE THE LEFT SIDE FIRST, THEN THE RIGHT SIDE, TO AVOID WINDSHIELD BREAKAGE.

RAISE HOOD TO FULL OPEN POSITION.

REMOVE

1. Hood seal using tool # J 21104-B.

2. Wiper arm assemblies, carefully removing the plastic caps covering the 13mm nuts and disconnecting the washer hoses.

3. Right and left side hood seals.

4. Left side air inlet grille, carefully removing the small rectangular cover, 7mm cap screws and plastic push type fasteners.

5. Right side air inlet grille, carefully removing the small rectangular cover, 7mm cap screws and plastic push type fasteners.

6. Perform sealing around perimeter of access hole cover using specified material (See Illustration).

IMPORTANT: It is not necessary to remove the cover for sealing.

REINSTALL

1. The right side grille and retainers. DO NOT FORCE PAST WINDSHIELD DURING INSTALLATION AS WINDSHIELD BREAKAGE COULD RESULT.

2. The left side grille and retainers.

3. The right and left hood seals.

4. The hood seal.

5. The wiper arms in proper position and torque attaching nuts to 20-26 Nm. (14 to 19 lb. ft.). Operate the wipers to insure proper operation.

6. The plastic caps over the wiper arm attaching nuts.
