CAMPAIGN: MISLABELED FUSE BLOC & INCORRECT OWNERS MAN. FUSE

Subject: PRODUCT CAMPAIGN 92C17 - MISLABELED FUSE BLOCK & INCORRECT OWNER'S MANUAL FUSE SPECIFICATIONS

Model and Year: 1992 CHEVROLET CAPRICE

To: All Chevrolet Dealers

General Motors has determined that certain 1992 Chevrolet Caprice model vehicles may have been assembled with mislabeled fuse blocks and/or owner's manuals which state the incorrect fuse specifications. Although these vehicles were assembled with the correct fuses, subsequent fuse replacements based on incorrect information could result in inadequate circuit protection or repeated fuse failures.

To correct this condition, owners of involved vehicles will be sent new fuse block specification inserts for the owners manual and, if applicable, a new fuse block label. Since these materials can easily be installed, and to reduce owner inconvenience, owners will be provided instructions to allow them to correct this condition themselves. However, if they desire, owners are being given the option to have the materials installed by their dealer at no charge.

VEHICLES INVOLVED

Involved are all 1992 Chevrolet Caprice model vehicles built within the following VIN breakpoints:

VEHICLES REQUIRING FUSE BLOCK LABEL AND OWNER'S MANUAL INSERTS -------------------------------------------------------------- PLANT YEAR MODEL PLANT CODE FROM THROUGH ---- ---- ----- ----- ---- ------- 1992 B-Car Arlington "R" NR100001 NR104680

Dealer unsold (in-stock) involved vehicles are identified by the enclosed Vehicle Identification Number Computer Listings. Owner name and address information for sold vehicles will not be provided to dealers for owner follow-up since owners will be completing this recall without dealer service. Any dealer not receiving a computer listing with the campaign bulletin has no in-stock involved vehicles currently assigned.

OWNER NOTIFICATION

Owners will be notified of this campaign on their vehicles by Chevrolet Motor Division (see copy of owner letter included with this bulletin). owner notification will contain new fuse block specification inserts for the owner's manual and, if required, a new fuse block label and installation instructions.

DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY

Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this campaign at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.

Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your new or used vehicle inventory, or it is in your dealership for service in the future, you should take the steps necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made before reselling or releasing the vehicle.

Owners of vehicles recently sold from your new vehicle inventory are to be contacted by the dealer, and arrangements made to make the required correction according to instructions contained in this bulletin.

PARTS INFORMATION

Parts required to complete this campaign are being sent directly to the owners of the vehicles. Parts for vehicles which Chevrolet records identify as "unsold" will be shipped directly to the dealer to whom the vehicle is invoiced. Dear 1992 Chevrolet Caprice Owner:

This notice is sent to inform you that Chevrolet Motor Division is conducting a recall campaign that includes your vehicle.

REASON FOR THIS RECALL

General Motors has determined that certain 1992 Chevrolet Caprice model vehicles may have been assembled with mislabeled fuse blocks and/or owner's manuals which state the incorrect fuse specifications. Although these vehicles were assembled with the correct fuses, subsequent fuse replacements based on incorrect information could result in inadequate circuit protection or repeated fuse failures.

WHAT WE WILL DO

To correct this condition, it is necessary to install a new fuse block specification insert in your owner's manual and, if your vehicle was assembled with a mislabeled fuse block, a new fuse block label must be installed. Since a new fuse block specification insert can easily be installed, and to reduce your inconvenience, we are enclosing the necessary insert with this letter. A new fuse block label is also enclosed if required for your vehicle. You may install these items yourself following the instructions included with this letter or, if you prefer, you may have your Chevrolet Dealer install them for you at no charge.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO

Please let us know if you elect to install these materials yourself by completing the enclosed postage paid owner reply card and returning it to us. This assists us in assuring that all affected vehicles have been corrected. If you have sold or traded your vehicle, please let us know by completing the postage paid owner reply card and returning it to us.

If you choose to have your Chevrolet dealer install the materials for you, please bring the owner reply card, fuse specification insert and fuse block label (if provided) to your Chevrolet dealer. Presentation of the reply card to your dealer will assist in making the necessary correction(s) in the shortest possible time. Please ask your dealer if you wish to know how much time will be needed to schedule and process your vehicle.

We are sorry to cause you this inconvenience; however, we have taken this action in the interest of your continued satisfaction with our products.

OWNER'S MANUAL INSERT INSTRUCTIONS (ALL VEHICLES)

Install new owner's manual fuse specification inserts to pages 271 and 272 of owner's manual. Also, install "Second Edition" sticker over "First Edition" information on bottom of page 1 (Table of Contents) of owner's manual.

FUSE BLOCK LABEL INSTRUCTIONS (IF REQUIRED)

1. Open driver's door and locate fuse block door on end of instrument panel (see illustration).

2. Fuse block door may be removed by pulling tab outward (see illustration).

3. Carefully peel backing paper from new label and install over existing label on fuse block door.

4. Reinstall fuse block door.

5. Check "Campaign Completed By Owner" box on enclosed postage paid reply card and return the card to us.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
