DEFECT INVOLVED

GENERAL MOTORS HAS DETERMINED THAT CERTAIN 1993 CHEVROLET CAPRICE LTZ MODEL VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH THE GU4 (3.08) REAR AXLE CONTAINED AN INCORRECT AXLE RATIO. THE VEHICLES WITH THESE INCORRECT AXLE RATIOS WILL AFFECT FUEL ECONOMY AND ACCURACY OF SPEEDOMETER READINGS.

TO PREVENT THE POSSIBILITY OF THESE CONDITIONS OCCURRING, DEALERS ARE TO REPLACE THE AXLE ASSEMBLY.

INVOLVED VEHICLES HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED BY VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER COMPUTER LISTINGS. COMPUTER LISTINGS CONTAIN THE COMPLETE VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER, OWNER NAME AND ADDRESS DATA, AND ARE FURNISHED TO INVOLVED DEALERS WITH THE CAMPAIGN DCS/BULLETIN. OWNER NAME AND ADDRESS DATA FURNISHED WILL ENABLE DEALERS TO FOLLOW-UP WITH OWNERS INVOLVED IN THIS CAMPAIGN.

ALL UNSOLD NEW VEHICLES IN DEALERS POSSESSION AND SUBJECT TO THIS CAMPAIGN MUST BE HELD AND CORRECTED PER THE SERVICE PROCEDURE OF THIS CAMPAIGN DCS/BULLETIN BEFORE OWNERS TAKE POSSESSION OF THESE VEHICLES.

DEALERS ARE TO SERVICE ALL VEHICLES SUBJECT TO THIS CAMPAIGN AT NO CHARGE TO OWNERS, REGARDLESS OF MILEAGE, AGE OF VEHICLE, OR OWNERSHIP, FROM THIS TIME FORWARD.

WHILE THE RING AND PINION GEAR SET IS THE CAUSE OF THIS INCORRECT AXLE RATIO CONDITION, TO ENSURE CUSTOMER SATISFACTION, DEALERS ARE TO REPLACE THE COMPLETE AXLE ASSEMBLY.

AXLE ASSEMBLIES REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THIS CAMPAIGN WILL BE PROVIDED BY CHEVROLET. DEALERS ARE TO CONTACT THE CHEVROLET TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE NETWORK (TAN) AT 1-800-227-3175 IN ORDER TO OBTAIN AN EXCHANGE UNIT. AT THE COMPUTER VOICE PROMPT SELECT FOR THE TRANSMISSION SERVICE MANUAL BULLETIN SPLIT. TAN WILL ARRANGE FOR AN EXCHANGE AXLE ASSEMBLY TO BE SHIPPED DIRECTLY TO YOUR DEALERSHIP.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

REFER TO SECTION 4 AND SECTION 5 OF THE 1993 CAPRICE SERVICE MANUAL FOR THE REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION OF THE REAR AXLE AND PARKING BRAKES RELATED COMPONENTS.

NOTICE: THE AXLE ASSEMBLY IS SHIPPED WITH THE PARKING BRAKE CABLES ALREADY ATTACHED TO THE REAR BRAKES.

THEREFORE, IT WILL NOT BE NECESSARY TO REMOVE THE BRAKE DRUMS AND ALL RELATED COMPONENTS.

ONLY THE PARKING BRAKE CABLES AT THE EQUALIZER, ABS SPEED SENSOR, AND REAR BRAKE PIPES HAVE TO BE REMOVED FROM THE AXLE HOUSING AND REINSTALLED.

IMPORTANT: FILL REAR AXLE WITH DIFFERENTIAL LUBRICANT AND ADDITIVE PER SERVICE MANUAL.

REAR BRAKES WILL HAVE TO BE BLED AFTER REINSTALLING BRAKE PIPES.

INSTALL CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL.

CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL

EACH VEHICLE CORRECTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE INSTRUCTION OUTLINED IN THIS PRODUCT CAMPAIGN DCS/BULLETIN WILL REQUIRE A "CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL." EACH LABEL PROVIDES A SPACE TO INCLUDE THE CAMPAIGN NUMBER AND THE FIVE (5) DIGIT DEALER CODE OF THE DEALER PERFORMING THE CAMPAIGN SERVICE. THIS INFORMATION MAY BE INSERTED WITH A TYPEWRITER OR A BALL POINT PEN.

EACH "CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL" IS TO BE LOCATED ON THE RADIATOR CORE SUPPORT IN AN AREA WHICH WILL BE VISIBLE WHEN THE VEHICLE IS BROUGHT IN FOR PERIODIC SERVICING BY THE OWNER. ADDITIONAL "CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABELS" CAN BE OBTAINED FROM DAC.

APPLY "CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL" ONLY ON A CLEAN, DRY SURFACE.

RETURN PROCEDURE FOR REMOVED AXLE ASSEMBLY

1. DRAIN ALL FLUID FROM REMOVED AXLE ASSEMBLY.

2. SECURE REMOVED AXLE ASSEMBLY ON ORIGINAL SHIPPING PALLET.

3. COIL AND TIE DOWN PARKING BRAKE CABLE SIMILAR TO THE EXCHANGE AXLE ASSEMBLY WHEN SHIPPED.

4. FILL IN THE INFORMATION REQUESTED ON THE SHIPPING TAG.

5. ATTACH SHIPPING TAG TO THE AXLE ASSEMBLY.

6. CONTACT THE PREFERRED FREIGHT CARRIER LISTED BELOW FOR YOUR REGION:

SUBMIT A PRODUCT CAMPAIGN CLAIM WITH THE INFORMATION BELOW:

*DEALERSHIPS WILL RECEIVE 0.1 HOURS CREDIT FOR ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS CAMPAIGN IN ADDITION TO .4 HRS CREDIT FOR PACKAGING THE AXLE ASSEMBLY FOR RETURN. THE 0.5 HOURS TOTAL ALLOWANCE IS TO BE ENTERED IN THE "OTHER LABOR HOURS" FIELD. THIS ENTRY WILL NOT REQUIRE AUTHORIZATION.

COMPLAINT CODE "SK" AND FAILURE CODE "00" MUST BE USED WITH THE LABOR OPERATION.

**THE REPLACEMENT OF THE COMPLETE AXLE ASSEMBLY IS DUE TO INCORRECT RING AND PINION RATIO, THEREFORE, THE 30% DEALER NET WILL BE APPLIED TO THE COST OF THE RING AND PINION SET. THIS ALLOWANCE PLUS FLUID AND ADDITIVE WILL APPEAR IN THE NET AMOUNT.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAKING THIS CORRECTION HAVE BEEN SENT TO YOUR DEALER AND PARTS ARE AVAILABLE. THE LABOR TIME NECESSARY TO PERFORM THIS SERVICE CORRECTION IS APPROXIMATELY ONE AND ONE HALF HOUR.
