CAMPAIGN: INCORRECT ENGINE OIL DIPSTICK

Subject: PRODUCT CAMPAIGN 93C05 - INCORRECT ENGINE OIL DIPSTICK

Model and Year: 1993 CHEVROLET CAPRICE W/ 5.OL OR 5.7L ENGINE (ARLINGTON ONLY)

To: Select Chevrolet Dealers

General Motors has determined that certain 1993 Chevrolet Caprice model vehicles equipped with 5.OL or 5.7L Engines (RPO's L03 or L05) and built at the Arlington assembly plant (VIN Code "R") have engine oil dipsticks which are approximately 20mm longer than the correct engineering specification. This condition would cause a properly filled engine to indicate an over-filled reading on the dipstick. Draining the oil to correct this condition would result in the engine oil being approximately 1 quart low.

To correct this condition, a new dipstick with the correct length will be sent to all owners of record. Additionally, those owners with under filled engines will be given the option to come to their dealerships to have the engine oil level inspected and adjusted as necessary.

VEHICLES INVOLVED

Involved are certain 1993 Chevrolet Caprice model vehicles equipped with 5.OL or 5.7L Engines (RPO's L03 or L05) and built at the Arlington assembly plant between the following VIN breakpoints:

PLANT YEAR MODEL PLANT CODE FROM THROUGH

1993 B-Car Arlington "R" PR100001 PR100458

Involved vehicles have been identified by Vehicle Identification Number Computer Listings. Computer listings containing the complete Vehicle Identification Number, owner name and address data are furnished to involved dealers with the campaign bulletin. Owner name and address data furnished will enable dealers to follow-up with owners involved in this campaign. Please follow-up with owners only AFTER January 25, 1993 to allow owners an opportunity to receive their dipsticks and install them or contact their dealer for an appointment.

These listings may contain owner names and addresses obtained from State Motor Vehicle Registration Records. The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any other purpose is a violation of law in several states. Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this listing to the follow-up necessary to complete this campaign. Any dealer not receiving a computer listing with the campaign bulletin has no involved vehicles currently assigned.

OWNER NOTIFICATION

Owners will be notified of this campaign on their vehicles by Chevrolet Motor Division (see copy of owner letter included with this bulletin). Owners are being instructed to call their Chevrolet dealer if they encounter problems in receiving their dipstick. Refer to the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin if an owner calls regarding dipstick problems.

DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY

Since a new dipstick can be easily installed, and for the owner's convenience, a new dipstick, along with installation instructions, will be sent directly to all owners of record. Owners may install the dipstick or they may ask the dealer to do the service. Owners of vehicles who want to have the engine oil level inspected will be instructed to make an appointment with the dealer to have this service completed.

If an owner calls regarding problems in receiving the dipstick, refer to the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin.

NOTICE: Due to the mailing schedule of dipsticks to owners, please follow-up with owners only AFTER January 25, 1993 to allow owners an opportunity to receive their dipsticks and install them or contact their dealer for an appointment.

All unsold new vehicles in dealers' possession and subject to this campaign must be held and inspected/repaired per the service procedure of this campaign bulletin before owners take possession of these vehicles.

Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this campaign at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.

Owners of vehicles recently sold from your new vehicle inventory are to be contacted by the dealer, and arrangements made to make the required correction according to instructions contained in this bulletin.

In summary, whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign enters your vehicle inventory, or is in your dealership for service in the future, please take the steps necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made before selling or releasing the vehicle.

Dear Chevrolet Caprice owner:

This notice is sent to inform you that Chevrolet Motor Division is conducting a recall campaign that includes your vehicle.

General Motors has determined that certain 1993 Chevrolet Caprice model vehicles were built with the engine oil dipstick longer than required. This condition would cause a properly filled engine to indicate an over-filled reading on the dipstick. Draining the oil to correct this condition would result in the engine oil being approximately one quart low.

To correct this condition, a new dipstick with installation instructions has been mailed to you with this letter. You may install the dipstick or ask your Chevrolet dealer to do the service. If additional engine oil is needed after the new dipstick is installed, you may obtain the oil from your dealer at no charge.

Instructions for making this correction have been sent to your dealer. Please ask your dealer if you wish to know how much time will be needed to schedule and process your vehicle.

If you should encounter a problem in receiving the dipstick, please call your local Chevrolet dealer. When calling your Chevrolet dealer, provide your complete name, complete address and vehicle identification number (as printed on the attached white owner reply card).

The enclosed postage paid owner reply card identifies your vehicle. If you perform this campaign yourself, please complete the card to indicate the campaign has been completed and return the card to us. If you decide to have your dealer perform this campaign, presentation of this card to your dealer will assist in making the necessary correction in the shortest possible time. However, if you have sold or traded your vehicle, please furnish us the complete name and address of the person you sold or traded your vehicle to and return the card to us.

We are sorry to cause you this inconvenience; however, we have taken this action in the interest of your continued satisfaction with our products.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
