CAMPAIGN: INCORRECT ENGINE OIL DIPSTICK

Subject: INCORRECT ENGINE OIL DIPSTICK

Models: 1993 Chevrolet Caprice and Buick Roadmaster Equipped with 5.OL (L03) or 5.7L (L05) Engine (Arlington Only)

TO: ALL GENERAL MOTORS DEALERS:

General Motors of Canada Limited has determined that certain 1993 Chevrolet Caprice and Buick Roadmaster model vehicles equipped with 5.OL or 5.7L engines (RPO's L03 and L05) built at the Arlington Assembly Plant (VIN Code R) have engine oil dipsticks that are approximately 20mm longer than the correct engineering specification. This condition would cause a properly filled engine to indicate an over filled reading on the dipstick. Draining the oil to correct this condition would result in the engine oil being approximately one liter low.

To correct this condition, a new dipstick with the correct length, will be sent to all owners of record. Additionally, those owners with under filled engines will be given the option to come to their dealerships to have the engine oil level inspected and adjusted as necessary.

VEHICLES INVOLVED:

Involved are certain 1993 Chevrolet Caprice and Buick Roadmaster model vehicles built at Arlington (VIN Code R) built within the following VIN breakpoints:

Model Year Model Plant From Through ---------- ----- ----- ---- ------- 1993 Caprice Arlington SOP PR100458

1993 Roadmaster Arlington SOP PR403524

All affected vehicles have been identified by the VIN listing provided to involved dealers with this bulletin. Any dealer not receiving a listing was not shipped any of die affected vehicles.

DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY:

Dealers are to perform this campaign on all involved vehicles at no charge to owners, regardless of kilometers traveled, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.

Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your new or used vehicle inventory, or it is in your dealership for service, you are to ensure the campaign correction has been made before selling or releasing the vehicle.

Owners of vehicles recently sold from your new vehicle inventory are to be contacted by the dealer, and arrangements made to make the required modification according to instructions contained in this bulletin.

Since a new dipstick can be easily installed and for the owner's convenience, a new dipstick, along with installation instructions, will be sent directly to all owners of record. Refer to PARTS INFORMATION if owner calls regarding dipstick problems. Owners may install the dipstick or they may ask the dealer to do the service. Owners of vehicles who want to have die engine oil level inspected will be instructed to make an appointment with the dealer to have this service completed.

CAMPAIGN PROCEDURE:

Refer to Section 4 of the Service Policies and Procedures Manual for the detailed procedure on handling Product Campaigns. Dealers are requested to complete the campaign on all transfers as soon as possible.

OWNER NOTIFICATION:

All owners of record at the time of campaign release are shown on the attached computer listing and have been notified by first class mail from General Motors (see copy of owner letter included with this bulletin). The listings provided are for campaign activity only and should not be used for any other purpose.

Owners will be notified of this campaign on their vehicles by General Motors (see copy of owner letter included with this bulletin). Owners are being instructed to call their General Motors dealer if they encounter problems in receiving their dipstick. Refer to PARTS INFORMATION if owner calls regarding dipstick problems.

A listing of owners' names and addresses will not be furnished to the involved dealers.

PARTS INFORMATION:

A new engine oil dipstick and instructions for installation and checking the engine oil level will be mailed to owners of record by General Motors on a no charge basis.

If an owner calls, stating he/she received a letter and no dipstick, please schedule an appointment at the dealership to have the campaign performed.

Engine oil dipsticks required for vehicles in your inventory (stock units), should be obtained from General Motors Service Parts Operation (GMSPO).

Dear General Motors Customer

General Motors of Canada Limited has determined that certain 1993 Chevrolet Caprice and Buick Roadmaster model vehicles were built with the engine oil dipstick longer than required. This condition would cause a properly filled engine to indicate an over filled reading on the dipstick. Draining the oil to correct this condition would result in the engine oil being approximately one liter low.

To correct this condition, a new dipstick with installation instructions has been mailed to you with this letter. You may install the dipstick or ask your dealer to do die service. If additional engine oil is needed after the new dipstick is installed, you may obtain the oil from your dealer at no charge.

If you have sold or traded your vehicle, please forward the dipstick to the new owner. If this is not convenient to you, please deliver the dipstick to your nearest GM dealer. DO NOT RETURN TO GENERAL MOTORS.

We appreciate your cooperation and are sorry to cause you this inconvenience; however, we have taken this action in the interest of your continued satisfaction with our products.

INSTALLATION OF ENGINE OIL DIPSTICK

1. Open your vehicle's engine compartment hood.

2. Locate the engine oil dipstick ("ENGINE OIL" painted on dipstick handle) to the left of the air cleaner when looking at engine from the front of vehicle.

3. Remove old dipstick from vehicle. Place in shipping tube and dispose properly.

4. Wipe the new dipstick clean and insert all the way into the engine dipstick tube.

5. Check engine oil level.

a) Pull out the dipstick and clean it with a paper towel or cloth.

b) Push the dipstick back in the tube all the way.

c) Remove the dipstick again, keeping the tip lower.

d) If the oil is at or below the ADD line, engine oil must be added.

6. Add oil, if necessary.

a) Remove ENGINE OIL FILL cap (located next to ENGINE OIL dipstick).

b) Add enough API SERVICE SG 5W-30 oil (see Owner's Manual for further instructions on using the right kind of oil) to raise indicated level above the ADD level to within the cross-hatched OPERATING RANGE (not to be above the OPERATING RANGE). No more than 1 liter of oil should be necessary.

c) Push the dipstick all the way back in the dipstick tube when through.

d) Tighten the ENGINE OIL FILL cap back on.

*IMPORTANT: You may choose to have this service performed at your dealer, at no charge. Please contact your local General Motors dealer to schedule an appointment.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
