For 1990-2009 cars only
- Disassemble the nuts and the heat shield from the clamp bolts/screws.
- Disassemble the nut and field lead from the solenoid switch.
- Disassemble the clamp bolts/screws and the solenoid switch with clamp from the drive housing.
- Disassemble the bolts/screws from the starter motor.
- Disassemble the commutator end frame, the brake washer, and the frame kit from the armature and the drive housing.
- Disassemble the plug from the drive end housing.
- Disassemble the armature with the starter drive, the shift lever, the plunger, and the starter solenoid switch plunger spring from the drive housing.
- Disassemble the starter solenoid switch plunger spring from the plunger.
- Disassemble the plunger from the shift lever.
- Disassemble the shift lever from the drive housing by spreading the lever arms slightly to disengage.
- Disassemble the thrust collar from the armature shaft.
- Disassemble the retainer by pushing the starter drive stop collar off of the retainer and sliding it off of the armature shaft.
- Discard the retainer.
- Disassemble the starter drive stop collar and the starter drive from the armature shaft.
- Inspect the starter motor components. Refer to Starter Motor Inspection .
