Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to General Vehicle Lifting and Jacking in General Information.
  2. Remove the heated oxygen sensor. Refer to Heated Oxygen Sensor Replacement in Engine Controls.

  3. Object Number: 72935  Size: SH
  4. Remove the muffler's bolts and screws.

  5. Object Number: 72938  Size: SH
  6. Remove the converter hanger's bolts/screws from the converter (right-hand only).
  7. Remove the dampener (right-hand only).

  8. Object Number: 72909  Size: SH
  9. Remove the screws (left-hand only).
  10. Remove the dampener (left-hand only).

  11. Object Number: 72942  Size: SH
  12. Remove the nuts from the manifold studs.
  13. Remove the converter.
  14. Remove the gasket.
  15. Clean the gasket sealing surfaces.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 72942  Size: SH
  1. Install the new gasket.
  2. Install the converter.
  3. Install the converter nuts.

  4. Object Number: 72909  Size: SH
  5. Install the dampener (left-hand only).
  6. Install the bolts (left-hand only)
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 41 N·m (30 lb in).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  8. Insert the converter hanger bolts through the dampener.
  9. Insert the converter support (right-hand only) into the converter.
  10. Finger-tighten the converter hanger bolts into the converter (right-hand only).
  11. Loosely install the muffler bolts.
  12. Tighten

        • Tighten the nuts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
        • Tighten the converter hanger bolts to 34 N·m (25 lb ft). Ensure that the bottom edge of the dampener is horizontal (right-hand only).
        • Tighten the muffler bolts to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).
  13. Install the heated oxygen sensor. Refer to Heated Oxygen Sensor Replacement in Engine Controls.
  14. Lower the vehicle.
