Adjustment

Linkage should be adjusted so that the engine starts in Park and Neutral only.

Caution: Personal injury may result if the engine can be started in a drive position.

Notice: Steering column attachment to body must be complete, and all body bolts/screws must be secure before adjusting steering column shift control linkage. Improper linkage adjustment can lead to clutch or band failure.

  1. Position the transmission control lever in the neutral gate notch.
  2. Place a 2-3 lb weight on the end of the control lever in order to eliminate any play.
  3. Raise the vehicle. Suitably support the vehicle. Refer to General Lifting and Jacking in General Information.

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  10. Lower the vehicle.
