Park/Neutral Position and Backup Lamp Switch Replacement Column Shift
Removal Procedure
- Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to
Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing
any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to
the vehicle or its components.

- If the vehicle is a Buick, then remove the instrument panel sound
insulator. Refer to Insulator Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges, and
Console.
- Disconnect the electrical
connectors from the switch.
- Place the shift lever in neutral.
- Remove the switch from the steering column. Use a screwdriver
in order to carefully pry the switch tangs from rectangular holes in the steering
column jacket.
Installation Procedure
- Install the switch to the steering column.
1.1. | Ensure that the shift lever is in neutral. |
1.2. | Position the actuator on the switch about midway through its travel
so the actuator will align with the hole in the shift tube. |
1.3. | Position the connector (outboard) side of the switch to fit the
switch into the cutout on the steering column jacket. |
1.4. | Push down on the switch in order to fully seat the switch. |
- Connect the electrical connectors to the switch.
- If the vehicle is a Buick, then install the instrument panel sound
insulator. Refer to Insulator Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges, and
Console.
- Adjust the switch by placing the shift lever in low gear, then
back in PARK.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
Park/Neutral Position and Backup Lamp Switch Replacement Floor Shift
Removal Procedure
- Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to

- Remove the shifter handle and the retainer.
- Remove the floor console. Refer to Front Floor Console in Instrument
Panel and Gauges.
- Disconnect the backup lamp/transmission position sensor switch
electrical connector.
- Remove the switch bolts/screws.
- Remove the backup lamp/transmission position sensor switch.
Installation Procedure
- Install the backup lamp/transmission position sensor switch.
- Install the backup lamp/transmission position sensor switch bolts/screws.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 2.2 N·m (19 lb in).
- Connect the backup lamp/transmission position sensor switch electrical
connector.
- Install the floor console. Refer to Front Floor Console in Instrument
Panel and Gauges.
- Install the shifter handle and the retainer.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
