Removal Procedure
Note: The left-hand drive model is shown. The right-hand drive model is similar.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to
Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
- Remove the front tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
- Remove the transaxle rear mount assembly. Refer to
Transmission Rear Mount Replacement for the 6T40/6T45 automatic transmission or
Transmission Rear Mount Replacement for
the AF33-5 automatic transmission.
- Place drain pan under the vehicle in order to catch the power steering fluid.
Caution: Refer to Power Steering Hose Disconnected Caution in the Preface section.
- Remove the fitting (1) and the pressure pipe from the power steering gear inlet.
- Remove the fitting (2) and the power steering gear fluid outlet pipe.
- Ask an assistant to rotate and hold the steering wheel in order for you to access the intermediate shaft pinch bolt.
- Disconnect the connector of the SSPS, if equipped.
- Scribe a mark on the stub shaft housing that lines up with a mark on the intermediate shaft lower coupling.
Caution: Refer to Steering Column in Lock Position Caution in the Preface section.
- Remove the intermediate shaft pinch bolt.
- Ask an assistant to lock the steering column in the straight-ahead position.
- Remove the outer tie rod nuts.
- Separate the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles.
- Remove the left mounting bolt from the steering gear.
- Remove the right mounting bolt from the steering gear.
- Remove the steering gear from the vehicle through the wheel housing area.
Installation Procedure
- Position the steering gear to the vehicle through the wheel housing area.
Note: Ensure the steering column and the steering gear are in the straight-ahead position. Install the steering gear from below the vehicle.
- Align the marks on the shafts in order to ensure proper positioning.
- Seat the stub shaft into the intermediate shaft.
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.
- Install the left and the right mounting bracket bolts to the steering gear and tighten to
110 N·m (81 lb ft).
- Install the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles.
- Install the nuts to the outer tie rod ends and tighten to
50 N·m (37 lb ft).
- Ask an assistant to rotate and hold the steering wheel in order for you to access the intermediate shaft pinch bolt.
- Install the lower intermediate shaft pinch bolt and tighten to
34 N·m (25 lb ft).
- Verify the steering column and the steering gear are in the straight-ahead position.
Caution: Refer to Installing Hoses without Twists or Bends Caution in the Preface section.
- Install the pressure pipe and the fitting (1) to the power steering gear fluid inlet and tighten to
28 N·m (21 lb ft).
- Install the power steering gear fluid outlet pipe and the fitting (2) and tighten to
28 N·m (21 lb ft).
- Install the transaxle rear mount assembly. Refer to
Transmission Rear Mount Replacement for the 6T40/6T45 automatic transmission or
Transmission Rear Mount Replacement for
the AF33-5 automatic transmission.
- Install the front tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to
Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection.
Caution: Refer to Using Proper Power Steering Fluid Caution in the Preface section.
- Refill the power steering system. Refer to
Checking and Adding Power Steering Fluid.
Caution: Refer to Air in the Power Steering System Caution in the Preface section.
- Bleed the power steering system. Refer to
Power Steering System Bleeding.
- Inspect the power steering system for leaks. If there are leaks, correct the cause of the leaks. Refer to
Power Steering Fluid Leaks.
- Inspect the position of the steering system. Refer to
Straight Ahead Inspection.
