DOOR INSIDE LOCKING KNOB FALLING OFF INSIDE LOCKING ROD

Model and Year 1982-84 CELEBRITY, CITATION, AND CAVALIER

This condition has three (3) possible causes (see illustration).

1. The hole in the back side of the locking knob that receives the end of the locking rod has a mold that is too shallow. Therefore, the locking rod does not seat properly into the locking tongs.

2. The end of the locking rod is too long creating the same condition as a shallow hole.

3. The locking tongs on the locking knob are not molded properly and, therefore, do not hold the locking rod.

To correct the condition due to (#1) the shallow hole or (#2) the long ended locking rod, remove material from the end of the rod to bring the specified dimension in the illustration to 3/8".

To correct the condition due to the shallow hole in the molded locking tongs, replace the knob with a new one, P/N 20380980 (bright) or 20380981 (black).

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
