Some subject vehicles may exhibit a condition where the temperature indicators incorrectly stay lit after starting the car. The telltale light and the bar graph lights are both affected. This condition occurs if the engine is started during the cluster's self test cycle at the instant all the bars are lit in the temperature bar graph.
To correct this condition, the dark green wire (circuit 35) going to the ignition switch must be cut and taped using the following procedure:
1. Remove 3 screws in the front of the LH sound absorber and drop the panel down. (Reference 1985 Cavalier Shop Manual Figure 8C1-112).
2. Remove the steering column trim cover (Shop Manual Figure 8C1-2)
3. Locate the dark green wire coming out of the IP Harness (RH side of steering column) and running to the ignition switch (black connector).
4. Cut the dark green wire and tape both ends with electrical tape.
5. Re-assemble steering column trim cover and sound absorber panel.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
