SERVICE PROCEDURE:

THE FOLLOWING SPECIFIES THE PROCEDURE TO ASSEMBLE AND CODE IGNITION LOCK CYLINDERS.

ALL IGNITION LOCK CYLINDERS -

IMPORTANT: THE LOCK CYLINDER CODING AND ASSEMBLY PROCEDURES REQUIRE THE FOLLOWING SPECIAL TOOL (OR EQUIVALENT):

J41340 - LOCK CYLINDER STAKING AND HOLDING FIXTURE

ONCE THE PROPER IGNITION LOCK CYLINDER AND TUMBLER SERVICE SETS HAVE BEEN ACQUIRED, PROCEED WITH THE CODING AND ASSEMBLY PROCEDURE.

1. DETERMINE TUMBLER NUMBERS AND ARRANGEMENT BY PLACING THE TIP OF THE KEY DIRECTLY OVER THE TIP OF THE ILLUSTRATED KEY (SEE FIGURES 1 OR 9). BE SURE THE KEY IS OUTLINED BY THE DIAGRAM.

- START WITH POSITION NUMBER ONE. FIND AND RECORD LOWEST LEVEL (TUMBLER NUMBER) THAT IS VISIBLE. REPEAT FOR EACH OF THE REMAINING NINE POSITIONS.

2. STARTING WITH POSITION ONE (OPEN END OF CYLINDER), INSERT TUMBLERS IN THEIR PROPER SLOTS IN THE ORDER CALLED FOR BY THE CODE.

3. PULL THE SIDE BAR OUT WITH YOUR FINGERS SO THAT THE TUMBLERS WILL DROP COMPLETELY INTO PLACE.

4. INSERT ONE TUMBLER SPRING ABOVE EACH NUMBER.

5. LUBRICATE THE TUMBLERS WITH MOBILE 1 SYNTHETIC SAE 10W30 ENGINE OIL, P/N 12346184. (SEE FIGURE 2).

IMPORTANT: DO NOT USE (NON-SYNTHETIC) ENGINE OIL.

6. INSERT THE SPRING RETAINER SO THAT ITS END PRONGS SLIDE INTO THE SLOTS AT EACH END OF THE CYLINDER. (SEE FIGURE 3).

7. PRESS THE RETAINER DOWN. MAKE SURE THAT THE RETAINER IS FULLY SEATED IN THE DEPRESSION.

8. WHILE HOLDING SPRING RETAINER IN POSITION, INSERT THE KEY INTO THE LOCK CYLINDER TO CHECK FOR PROPER TUMBLER INSTALLATION.

THE SIDE BAR WILL DROP DOWN FLUSH WITH CYLINDER DIAMETER IF THE TUMBLERS ARE INSTALLED PROPERLY. DISASSEMBLE AND REASSEMBLE IF NECESSARY. (SEE FIGURE 4).

9. REMOVE THE KEY AND SECURE THE CYLINDER IN A LOCK CYLINDER STAKING AND HOLDING FIXTURE. (SEE FIGURE 5).

- MAKE SURE THE SPRING RETAINER IS FACING UP AND IS POSITIONED DIRECTLY UNDER PUNCH SLOTS.

- PUSH THE CYLINDER INTO THE LOCK CYLINDER STAKING AND HOLDING FIXTURE AS FAR AS IT WILL GO. THE PUNCH SLOT NEEDS TO BE BUTTED UP AGAINST THE CYLINDER BEZEL.

10. TIGHTEN HOLDING SCREW TO SECURE CYLINDER IN THE LOCK CYLINDER HOLDING FIXTURE.

11. HOLD THE FLAT SIDE OF PUNCH SQUARELY AGAINST THE FACE OF THE CYLINDER BEZEL (SEE FIGURE 6) AND STAKE THE RETAINER IN PLACE BY STAKING LOCK CYLINDER METAL OVER THE RETAINER CORNERS.

12. REMOVE THE PUNCH AND ROTATE 180 DEGREES. HOLD IT SQUARELY AGAINST THE END OF THE PUNCH SLOT AND STAKE METAL OVER THE OTHER END OF THE RETAINER. (SEE FIGURE 7).

13. LOOSEN HOLDING SCREW AND REMOVE CYLINDER FROM LOCK CYLINDER HOLDING FIXTURE.

14. INSPECT RETAINER STAKING TO MAKE SURE THE DEFORMED MATERIAL IS TOUCHING THE RETAINER TO SECURE THE RETAINER IN POSITION. REPEAT STAKING IF NECESSARY.

15. LUBRICATE THE CYLINDER RETAINER SLOT AND INSERT THE RETAINER SPRING AND THE CYLINDER RETAINER INTO THE SLOT IN CYLINDER. (SEE FIGURE 8).

16. LUBRICATE THE DETENT PINS AND CYLINDER RETAINER WITH P/N 12345996 OR AN EQUIVALENT HIGH TEMPERATURE GREASE.

IMPORTANT: USE A PASTE TYPE GREASE, NOT A SPRAY.
