INFORMATION ON USE OF HAIRPIN CLIP FOR HEADREST RETENTION

SUBJECT: INFORMATION ON USE OF HAIRPIN CLIP FOR HEADREST RETENTION

MODELS: 1995 CHEVROLET CAVALIER 1995 PONTIAC SUNFIRE BUILT PRIOR TO VIN BREAKPOINT S7011356

SOME OF THE ABOVE LISTED VEHICLES MAY HAVE THE HEADREST RETAINED BY A HAIRPIN CLIP THROUGH A HOLE IN THE BOTTOM OF ONE OF THE TWO POSTS OF THE HEADREST.

INSPECT THE SLOT IN THE HEADREST GUIDE TO DETERMINE HOW THE HEADREST IS RETAINED. REFER TO FIGURE 3, ITEM 3 ON PAGE 10-10-4 OF THE SERVICE MANUAL. IF THE SLOT IS POSITIONED IN THE FORWARD DIRECTION, THEN THE HEADREST IS RETAINED BY A HAIRPIN CLIP THROUGH A HOLE IN THE BOTTOM OF ONE OF THE TWO POSTS OF THE HEADREST. IF THE SLOT IS POSITIONED IN THE DIRECTION OF THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE, THEN THE HEADREST IS RETAINED BY A SPRING CLIP IN THE HEADREST GUIDE.

USE PROCEDURE A TO REMOVE AND INSTALL A HEADREST THAT IS RETAINED BY A HAIRPIN CLIP THROUGH A HOLE IN ONE OF THE TWO POSTS. USE PROCEDURE B TO REMOVE AND INSTALL A HEADREST THAT IS RETAINED BY A SPRING CLIP IN THE HEADREST GUIDE.

IMPORTANT: THE HEADRESTS ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE.

PROCEDURE A:

REMOVAL -

1. POSITION HEADREST TO THE DOWN POSITION.

2. POSITION SEATBACK TO THE FORWARD POSITION.

3. UNLOCK THE CLOSEOUT STRIP OF SEATBACK. REFER TO FIGURE 7 ON PAGE 10-10-8 OF THE SERVICE MANUAL.

4. REACH UNDER SEATBACK COVER AND LOCATE THE HEADREST POSTS.

5. REMOVE HAIRPIN CLIP ATTACHED TO BOTTOM OF ONE OF THE TWO HEADREST POSTS.

6. REMOVE HEADREST BY PULLING UPWARD.

INSTALLATION -

1. LOCATE HEADREST POST TO CENTER OF HEADREST GUIDES.

2. PUSH HEADREST DOWNWARD.

3. REACH UNDER SEATBACK COVER AND LOCATE THE HEADREST POSTS.

4. INSTALL HAIRPIN CLIP TO THE BOTTOM OF THE HEADREST POST WITH THE HOLE.

5. LOCK THE CLOSEOUT STRIP OF SEATBACK. REFER TO FIGURE 7 ON PAGE 10-10-8 OF THE SERVICE MANUAL.

PROCEDURE B:

REMOVAL -

1. POSITION HEADREST IN THE UP POSITION.

2. PUSH HEADREST DOWN APPROXIMATELY 25MM (1 INCH).

3. SLIDE HEADREST REMOVAL TOOL, J 39509 OR EQUIVALENT, DOWNWARD BETWEEN THE FRONT OF BOTH HEADREST POSTS AND THE HEADREST GUIDES. REFER TO FIGURE 3 ON PAGE 10-10-4 OF THE SERVICE MANUAL.

4. ROTATE THE HEADREST REMOVAL TOOL, J 39509 OR EQUIVALENT, 90 DEGREES TOWARD THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE.

5. REMOVE THE HEADREST BY PULLING UPWARD.

INSTALLATION -

1. LOCATE HEADREST POST TO CENTER OF HEADREST GUIDES.

2. PUSH HEADREST DOWNWARD.
