Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the engine assembly. Refer to Engine Replacement .
  2. Place the engine on a stand.
  3. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  4. Remove the generator. Refer to Generator Removal in Engine Electrical.
  5. Remove the generator brackets.
  6. Remove the power steering pump. Refer to SECTION 3B1.
  7. Remove the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement .
  8. Remove the coolant pump pulley. Refer to Coolant Pump Pulley Removal in Engine Cooling.
  9. Remove the engine oil and the filter.
  10. Remove the crankshaft pulley and the crankshaft pulley hub. Refer to Crankshaft Pulley and Hub Removal .
  11. Remove the valve rocker arm cover. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Removal .
  12. Remove the rocker arm and pushrod. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm, Push Rod, and Stud Removal .
  13. Remove the valve lifter. Refer to Valve Lifter Removal .
  14. Remove the crankcase front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Removal .
  15. Remove the following components. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprockets Removal .
  16. 15.1. Remove the cam sprocket.
    15.2. Remove the timing chain.
    15.3. Remove the tensioner.
  17. Remove the oil pump drive.

  19. Remove the thrust plate.

  20. Object Number: 30275  Size: SH
  21. Remove the camshaft position sensor.

  22. Object Number: 4322  Size: SH
  23. Remove the camshaft. Do not damage the camshaft bearings with the camshaft.

Installation Procedure

  1. Coat the camshaft lobes and bearings with GM E.O.S. P/N 1051396 or equivalent.

  2. Object Number: 4322  Size: SH
  3. Install the camshaft with extreme care to avoid damage to the camshaft bearings.

  4. Object Number: 30275  Size: SH
  5. Install the camshaft position sensor.

  6. Object Number: 4321  Size: SH
  7. Install the thrust plate.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  9. Install the following components. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprockets Installation .
  10. 5.1. Install the tensioner.
    5.2. Install the timing chain.
    5.3. Install the sprockets.
  11. Install the crankcase front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover and Oil Seal Installation .
  12. Install the valve lifters in the same bores from which they were removed.
  13. Install the oil pump drive.
  14. Install the rocker arm and pushrod. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm, Push Rod, and Stud Installation .
  15. Install the valve rocker arm cover. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Installation .
  16. Install the crankshaft pulley hub. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer and Hub Installation .
  17. Install the coolant pump pulley and the crankshaft pulley hub. Refer to Coolant Pump Installation in Engine Cooling.
  18. Install the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement .
  19. Install the power steering pump. Refer to SECTION 3B1.
  20. Install the generator. Refer to Generator Installation in Engine Electrical.
  21. Install the generator brackets.
  22. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  23. Install the engine assembly. Refer to Engine Replacement .
  24. Install the oil filter.
  25. Fill the engine with oil.
  26. Fill the cooling system.
