J 37868 Oil Passage Plug Installer

  1. Use the following steps to remove the oil passage plug:
  2. 1.1. Using an 8.33 mm (21/64 in) bit, drill the oil passage plug.
    1.2. With a 10.0 mm (0.3937 in) bottoming tap, thread the plug.
    1.3. Install a 10.0 mm (0.3937 in) bolt into the plug and pull the plug out and discard.
  3. Clean the oil passage plug hole.
  4. Install the new oil passage plug. Use the J 37868 .
  5. Inspect the camshaft sprockets.
  6. Inspect the camshaft sprocket bolt threads.
  7. Inspect the bearing surfaces, lobes and the camshaft position reluctor for the following conditions:
  8. • Wear
    • Galling
    • Gouges
    • Overheating and discoloration

    Important: Do not attempt to repair the camshaft, replace it if it is damaged. If a new camshaft is installed, the valve lifters actuated by that camshaft must also be replaced.

  9. With a micrometer measure the bearing journal diameter. Replace the camshaft if the measurement is out of specification.
  10. Important: If a new camshaft has been installed, add Engine Oil Supplement GM P/N 1052367 or equivalent to the engine oil.

  11. Coat the entire camshaft with Camshaft and Lifter Prelube GM P/N 12345501 or equivalent.
