J 37868 Oil Passage
Plug Installer
- Use the following steps to remove the oil passage plug:
1.1. | Using an 8.33 mm (21/64 in) bit, drill the oil passage
plug. |
1.2. | With a 10.0 mm (0.3937 in) bottoming tap, thread
the plug. |
1.3. | Install a 10.0 mm (0.3937 in) bolt into the plug
and pull the plug out and discard. |
- Clean the oil passage plug hole.
- Install the new oil passage plug. Use the J 37868
.
- Inspect the camshaft sprockets.
- Inspect the camshaft sprocket bolt threads.
- Inspect the bearing surfaces, lobes and the camshaft position
reluctor for the following conditions:
• | Overheating and discoloration |
Important: Do not attempt to repair the camshaft, replace it if it is damaged.
If a new camshaft is installed, the valve lifters actuated by that camshaft
must also be replaced.
- With a micrometer measure the bearing journal diameter. Replace the
camshaft if the measurement is out of specification.
Important: If a new camshaft has been installed, add Engine Oil Supplement GM P/N
1052367 or equivalent to the engine oil.
- Coat the entire camshaft with Camshaft and Lifter Prelube GM P/N 12345501
or equivalent.
