Transaxle Noise
The tires, the condition of the road surfaces, the wheel bearings, the
engine, or the exhaust system are often the source of noise associated with
the transaxle. These noises vary by the vehicle size and type, and in relation
to the amount of body insulation used. A thorough check of all possible sources
is recommended before disassembly of the transaxle. Transaxle gears exhibit
some normal operating noise. The following is a suggested approach to verifying
abnormal transaxle noise:
• | Select a smooth level asphalt road. This will reduce any tire
or resonant body noise. |
• | Drive the vehicle enough to warm up all of the lubricants. |
• | Record the speed and gear range at which noise occurs. |
• | Check for noise with the engine running and the vehicle stopped. |
• | Determine in which of the following drive conditions noise is
occurring: |
- | DRIVE -- light acceleration or heavy pull |
- | FLOAT -- maintaining constant speed at light throttle |
- | COAST -- partially or fully closed throttle with transaxle
in gear |
