AIR LEAKING FROM I/P VENTS IN HEATER OR DEFROST MODES

SUBJECT: AIR LEAKING FROM I/P VENTS IN HEATER OR DEFROST MODES (REPLACE MODE VALVE VACUUM ACTUATOR; ADD CLIP TO HVAC MODULE CASE)

MODELS: 1996 CHEVROLET CAVALIER 1996 PONTIAC SUNFIRE

CONDITION:

SOME OWNERS MAY COMMENT THAT AIR CAN BE FELT COMING THROUGH THE INSTRUMENT PANEL (I/P) VENTS WHILE THE HVAC SYSTEM IS IN "HEATER" OR "DEFROST" MODE. NO AIR SHOULD BE FELT THROUGH THE I/P VENTS IN THESE MODES.

CAUSE:

THE MODE VALVE MAY NOT SEAL TIGHTLY TO THE HVAC MODULE, ALLOWING AIR TO ESCAPE THROUGH THE I/P VENTS.

CORRECTION:

REPLACE THE MODE VALVE VACUUM ACTUATOR AND ADD A CLIP TO THE HVAC MODULE CASE.

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT:

1. NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE.

2. DISABLE SIR, REFER TO SECTION 9J OF THE SERVICE MANUAL.

3. LEFT HUSH PANEL.

4. ACTUATOR FROM MODULE.

5. I/P PAD. REFER TO SECTION 8C2 OF THE SERVICE MANUAL.

6. AIR DISTRIBUTION DUCT.

7. ACTUATOR LINK FROM MODE VALVE LEVER.

8. ACTUATOR FROM VEHICLE.

INSTALL OR CONNECT:

1. CLIP TO HVAC MODULE, REFER TO FIGURE 1.

O POSITION CLIP AS FAR TO THE REAR OF THE HVAC MODULE AS POSSIBLE.

O VERIFY THAT CLIP DOES NOT INTERFERE WITH MODE VALVE LEVER OPERATION.

2. ACTUATOR LINK TO MODE VALVE LEVER.

3. AIR DISTRIBUTION DUCT.

4. I/P PAD.

5. ACTUATOR TO MODULE.

6. LEFT HUSH PANEL.

7. ENABLE SIR.

8. NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE.
