Did you perform the Radio/Audio System Diagnostic System Check?

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Turn ON the radio.
  3. Adjust the radio balance and fade to the suspect speaker.

Does the speaker operate properly?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

Go to Step 3

Is the vehicle equipped with an audio amplifier?

Go to Step 4

Go to Step 5

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the audio amplifier connector.
  3. Using two fused jumpers, connect the suspect speaker inputs to the suspect speaker outputs of the audio amplifier in order to bypass the audio amplifier.
  4. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  5. Turn ON the radio.
  6. Adjust the radio balance and fade to the suspect speaker.

Does the speaker operate properly?

Go to Step 8

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Remove and disconnect the radio.
  3. Momentarily touch a 1.5 volt battery between the appropriate speaker circuits.

Does the speaker emit an audible pop?

Go to Step 7

Test the circuits of the appropriate speaker for an open or high resistance. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the condition?

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the radio. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Test the audio amplifier battery positive voltage circuit for an open, high resistance, or a short to ground.
  3. Test the audio amplifier ground circuit for an open or high resistance.

Did you find and correct the condition?

Go to Step 16

  1. Disconnect the audio amplifier connector.
  2. Test the appropriate speaker outputs of the audio amplifier for an open, high resistance, short to ground, or a short to voltage.

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Remove and disconnect the radio.
  3. Momentarily touch a 1.5 volt battery between the appropriate speaker circuits.

Does the speaker emit an audible pop?
