Checks

Action

DEFINITION: A surging or jerking that follows engine speed. It is usually more pronounced as the engine load increases.

Preliminary Checks

    • Refer to Symptoms .
    • Search for service bulletins.
    • Inspect the control module grounds. The grounds should be clean, tight and in the proper locations.

Sensor Checks

    • Inspect the oxygen sensor (O2S) for contamination and performance.
    • Inspect for proper operation of the TP sensor.
    • Inspect for proper operation of the MAP sensor.
    • Inspect for proper operation of the ECT sensor.
    • Inspect the EGR valve for a stuck open pintle.

Ignition System Checks

CNG is a gaseous fuel. It requires higher secondary ignition system voltages for the equivalent gasoline operating conditions. If a problem is reported during CNG operation but not during gasoline operation, do not discount the possibility of a CNG-only ignition system failure. Test the system accordingly.

    • Inspect for the proper ignition output voltage using the J 26792 or the equivalent.
    • Inspect the spark plugs. Remove the plugs and inspect them for the following conditions:
       - Wet plugs
       - Cracks on the spark plugs
       - Wear
       - Improper spark plug gap
       - Burned electrodes
       - Heavy deposits
    • Inspect the spark plug wires for the proper resistance and condition.
    • Inspect the ignition coils for cracks or carbon tracking.
    • Inspect for loose ignition coil connections.
    • Inspect for loose engine control module grounds.
    • Inspect for loose ignition control module grounds.

Engine Mechanical Checks

    • Perform a cylinder compression check. Refer to Engine Compression Test in Engine Mechanical - 2.2L in the J Platform Service Manual.
    • Inspect the engine for the following conditions:
       - Improper valve timing
       - Worn rocker arms
       - Worn camshaft lobes
       - Broken or weak valve springs
    • Inspect the intake and the exhaust manifold passages for casting flash. Refer to Intake Manifold Clean and Inspect and Exhaust Manifold Clean and Inspect in Engine Mechanical - 2.2L in the J Platform Service Manual.

Fuel System Checks

    • Inspect the fuel system for the following conditions (refer to Fuel System Diagnosis ):
       - Plugged fuel filter
       - Low fuel pressure
    • Inspect the condition of the wiring to the high pressure lock-off valve and the low pressure lock-off valve.

Additional Checks

    • Inspect for electromagnetic interference (EMI). EMI on the reference circuit can cause a missing condition. Monitoring the engine RPM with a scan tool can detect an EMI problem. A sudden increase in the RPM with little change in the actual engine RPM indicates EMI is present. If the problem exists, inspect the routing of the secondary wires and the ground circuit.
    • Inspect the exhaust system for possible restrictions and the following conditions:
       - Inspect the exhaust system for damaged or collapsed pipes
       - Inspect the muffler for signs of heat distress or for possible internal failure
       - Inspect for a possible plugged catalytic converter. Refer to Restricted Exhaust System Check in Engine Controls - 2.2L in the J Platform Service Manual.
