POWER RACK AND PINION VALVE RINGS - SERVICE INFO.

Subject: VALVE BODY RING INSTALLATION - RACK AND PINION STEERING GEAR

If difficulty is experienced when installing valve body rings on a valve and pinion assembly, follow the instructions below. The instructions also explain the use of J-33057 to help resize the rings before installing the valve and pinion assembly into the housing.

INSTALLATION OF VALVE BODY RINGS

To provide easier assembly of rings to valve body, the rings may be placed in hot (approx 150 to 200 deg F) water for about 10 to 15 minutes, then stretched to slide ober the valve body and placed in the grooves. Do not attempt to stretch the rings any more than is necessary to slide them over.

The valve body and pinion assembly, with the rings installed, should be placed in the J-33057 tool and left for approximately 10-15 minutes before assembling into the housing. This will insure resizing of the rings to help prevent the rings from catching on the edges of grooves which may be in the housing. Lubrication of the rings and housing bore with power steering fluid will also aid in assembly. Attempting to force the assembly into the housing can result in damage to the rings.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
