DIESEL REDUCTION STARTERS STARTER NOISE/BROKEN HOUSING

Abnormal starter motor cranking noise on the new 5.7L diesel gear reduction starter may be due to improper clearance between the flywheel ring gear teeth and the starter drive gear. The noise can be corrected using .015 shims (P/N 10008053) at the starter mounting area. Should more than .045 shim be required to obtain the proper ring gear teeth to starter drive gear mesh, you should replace the starter drive housing (P/N 1972698) and center bearing support (P/N 1972700).

Improper mesh of the starter drive gear teeth could result in a broken starter drive housing. Starter drive housings can be ordered through GMWDD using P/N 1972698. If replacement of the starter drive housing becomes necessary, an inspection of the reduction drive gear and the armature should also be made for possible damage.

The 5.7L diesel gear reduction starter motor P/N is 1998552. The usage of this part number is listed in the 1982 Parts Manual as fitting a 4.3L V-6 engine only. It is also applicable to the (350N) 5.7L diesel engine.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
