FUEL STARVATION AT HIGH ALTITUDE

Some 1982 "A" and "X" cars with 2.8L V6 engines may experience fuel starvation at high altitudes during high ambient temperatures (70 DEG F or higher). The condition usually occurs when an attempt is made to restart a vehicle following a 15-20 minute hot soak.

To alleviate this condition, install a brass restrictor with a 1mm orifice per illustration "B". Install the restrictor inside the 5/16" diameter hose portion of the vapor return line located at the left side of the engine compartment (see illustration "A"). To install the restrictor, disconnect the hose at the forward clamp, insert the restrictor inside the hose and reinstall the hose clamp torquing it to 1.4 N.m to 1.7 N.m.

The restrictors can be acquired by contacting the local Chevrolet zone office or fabricate locally.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
