Some 1985 THM 440-T4 model CP or CW transaxles (refer to Figure 1) may exhibit a condition of second gear start out with the selector in "DRIVE" after coastdown from second, third or fourth gear operation. The condition may occur several times (especially when the transaxle is cold) and may be caused by the 1-2 shift valve remaining in the upshifted position due to residual pressure in the governor circuit. The following chart lists, by model, the Julian date a new governor assembly went into production and the service replacement part number.
CW 81 8644963
To repair the second gear start out on any 1985 THM 440-T4 model CP or CW transaxle built before the listed Julian date, install the appropriate new design governor assembly. Refer to the Service Information Manual for proper service procedures.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
