BLUSHING EXTERIOR W / DISPERSION LAQUER PAINT

Model and Year 1985 CELEBRITY, CAPRICE, IMPALA, MONTE CARLO, CAVALIER, CHEVETTE

TO: ALL CHEVROLET DEALERS

The exterior of some of the above car lines that were finished with Dis- persion Lacquer may exhibit a blushing condition. Blushing can best be described as a white hazy or milky discoloration. This condition can be determined by comparing the appearance of the outside rearview mirrors or soft body fascia to adjacent body parts. A finish that shows blushing can be polished to a high luster, but will show signs of blushing within a few days.

Blushing is a result of a quantity of paint that was contaminated in the manufacturing process.

Some 1985 cars with the following paint colors built at the listed plants within the indicated VIN break points are affected:

It will be necessary to color coat entire car, except soft fascia, to correct blushing using the following procedure:

Detach all readily removable exterior items necessary to produce a quality paint job. (Moldings, headlamp bezels, taillamps, grilles emblems, etc.). This does not include "glue-on moldings.

Thoroughly clean the exterior with a detergent and water followed by a wax and grease remover. (Du Pont's 3919 S or equivalent).

Clean with Lacquer and Enamel Cleaner (Du Pont's 3939 S or equivalent).

Wet sand with 600 or finer paper.

Reclean exterior with Lacquer and Enamel Cleaner (Du Pont's 3939 S or equivalent) and tack off.

Apply 3 to 5 coats of Acrylic Lacquer so that a minimum film build of 1.0 mil. is maintained after compounding (Du Pont's Lucite, code 79-B8509, code 19-99S or equivalent).

Allow to dry overnight and compound.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
