On 1982 Celebrity, Citation and Camaro vehicles with a 2.5L L4 EFI engine, a shorted torque converter clutch solenoid may be the cause of an inoperative A/C compressor. The shorted solenoid may cause the A/C compressor to not engage at all, or to be inoperative until TCC engagement speed is reached, then operate normally.
Before faulting TCC solenoid, the solenoid should be diagnosed by using the torque converter clutch electrical diagnosis chart in Section 6E2 of the appropriate service manual. If the solenoid is found to be shorted, it will be necessary to replace the ECM. Since any shorted ECM controlled solenoid will cause damage to the ECM.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
