A blown fuel pump fuse on a 1985 Cutlass Ciera equipped with a 3.8L MPFI engine and gauge (Option U21) may be caused by the oil pressure sending switch lead wires contacting the right drive axle. This condition may be due to an excess length of harness lead and can be repaired by wrapping the excess length around the main harness branch before engaging the wire connector to the switch. See Figure 1. This procedure should be followed after repairing any wire damage. It is also suggested that these wires be checked for clearance at pre-delivery inspection and repaired if necessary.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
