Some customers driving a 1989 A car with a 2.8L engine (VIN Code W) may comment concerning poor oil economy and/or bluish colored smoke coming from the tailpipe. The cause of these comments may be the valve stem seals. To repair these conditions, complete the following:
1. Check the engine serial number on the rectangular machined pad located on the left side of the engine.
If the engine serial number begins with an "A" and is between 90810 and 90922, then replace all valve stem seals with new seals. The new seals may be obtained from GMSPO.
Seal Description Service Part Number ---------------- ------------------- Inlet Valve Stem 14091807 Exhaust Valve Stem 10070125
2. Perform diagnostic checks as indicated in Section 6 of the Service Manual.
Labor Operation Number: J0547 Labor Time: 1.8 Hour Add: 1.3 Hour To Replace All Springs, caps/seals Both Banks
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
