PRODUCT SAFETY CAMPAIGN - POWER SEAT WIRING HARNESS
1990 (A-BODY) WAGON WITH 6-WAY POWER SEAT (RPO AG1) AND/OR POWER RECLINERS (RPO A83)
THE NATIONAL TRAFFIC AND MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY ACT, AS AMENDED, PROVIDES THAT EACH VEHICLE WHICH IS SUBJECT TO A RECALL CAMPAIGN OF THIS TYPE MUST BE ADEQUATELY REPAIRED WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME AFTER THE OWNER HAS TENDERED IT FOR REPAIR. A FAILURE TO REPAIR WITHIN SIXTY (60) DAYS AFTER TENDER OF A VEHICLE IS PRIMA FACIE EVIDENCE OF FAILURE TO REPAIR WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME.
IF THE CONDITION IS NOT ADEQUATELY REPAIRED WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME, THE OWNER MAY BE ENTITLED TO AN IDENTICAL OR REASONABLY EQUIVALENT VEHICLE AT NO CHARGE OR TO A REFUND OF THE PURCHASE PRICE LESS A REASONABLE ALLOWANCE FOR DEPRECIATION.
TO AVOID HAVING TO PROVIDE THESE BURDENSOME SOLUTIONS, EVERY EFFORT MUST BE MADE TO PROMPTLY SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT WITH EACH OWNER AND TO REPAIR THEIR VEHICLE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. AS YOU WILL SEE IN READING THE ATTACHED COPY OF THE LETTER THAT IS BEING SENT TO OWNERS, THE OWNERS ARE BEING INSTRUCTED TO CONTACT THE (DIVISION) CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER IF THEIR DEALER DOES NOT REMEDY THE CONDITION WITHIN FIVE (5) DAYS OF THE MUTUALLY AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE. IF THE CONDITION IS NOT REMEDIED WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME, THEY ARE INSTRUCTED ON HOW TO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION.
DEFECT INVOLVED
GENERAL MOTORS HAS DETERMINED THAT A DEFECT WHICH RELATES TO MOTOR VEHICLE SAFET Y EXISTS IN CERTAIN 1990 (A-BODY) WAGON MODEL VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 6-WAY POWER SEATS (RPO AG1) AND/OR POWER RECLINERS (RPO A83). THE POWER SEAT OR RECLINER WIRING HARNESS ROUTING IN THESE VEHICLES MAY CAUSE THE HARNESS TO BECOME PINCHED OR CHAFED ON THE SEAT FRAME OR SPRING SUPPORT ROD CAUSING POSSIBLE IN TERMITTENT SHORT CIRCUITS. THESE SHORT CIRCUITS MAY THEN CAUSE THE CIRCUIT BREAKER TO WELD CLOSED AND THE UNPROTECTED SHORT CIRCUIT COULD GENERATE SUFFICIENT HEAT AT THE SHORTED LOCATION TO PRODUCE SMOKE AND/OR IGNITE THE SEAT CUSHION MATERIALS.
TO PREVENT THIS CONDITION FROM OCCURRING, DEALERS ARE TO INSPECT THE WIRING HARNESS AND, AFTER REPAIRING ANY ABRADED AREAS, REROUTE THE HARNESS USING A WIRING HARNESS CLIP.

PARTS REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THIS CAMPAIGN ARE TO BE OBTAINED FROM GENERAL MOTORS SERVICE PARTS OPERATIONS (GMSPO). TO ENSURE THESE PARTS WILL BE OBTAINED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, THEY SHOULD BE ORDERED FROM GMSPO ON A "C.I.O." ORDER WITH NO SPECIAL INSTRUCTION CODE, BUT ON AN ADVISE CODE (2).

SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. MOVE SEAT TO FULL REARWARD POSITION. ON 6-WAY POWER SEAT, ALSO MOVE TO THE FULL UP POSITION.
2. REMOVE FRONT TRACK COVERS AND ADJUSTER-TO-FLOOR PAN BOLTS.
3. MOVE SEAT TO FULL FORWARD POSITION.
4. REMOVE REAR TRACK COVERS AND ADJUSTER-TO-FLOOR PAN BOLTS.
5. TILT SEAT COMPLETELY BACK SO ENTIRE AREA UNDER SEAT CUSHION IS VISIBLE (SEE ILLUSTRATION, PAGE 4).
6. CUT AND REMOVE STRAP ATTACHING WIRING HARNESS TO SPRING WIRE NEAR MIDDLE OF SEAT.
7. INSPECT WIRING HARNESS AND MAKE REPAIRS AS NECESSARY WITH ELECTRICAL TAPE.
8. INSTALL WIRING HARNESS TO NEW WIRING HARNESS CLIP (SEE ILLUSTRATION).
9. REROUTE WIRING HARNESS THROUGH DETENT AND INSERT NEW WIRING HARNESS CLIP IN TO FORWARD MOST HOLE IN SEAT CUSHION FRAME (SEE ILLUSTRATION). WIRING HARNESS MUST NOT BE PINCHED BETWEEN CUSHION AND SPRING, OR CONTACT SHARP EDGES.
10. TILT SEAT BACK TO ORIGINAL POSITION AND ALIGN SEAT.
11. INSTALL ADJUSTER-TO-FLOOR PAN BOLTS. TORQUE TO 24 NM (18 LB. FT.).
12. CHECK SEAT FOR PROPER OPERATION.
13. REPEAT FOR OPPOSITE FRONT SEAT IF NECESSARY (SEE "NOTICE" ABOVE).
14. INSTALL FRONT AND REAR TRACK COVERS.
15. INSTALL CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL.
CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL
EACH VEHICLE CORRECTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE INSTRUCTIONS OUTLINED IN THIS PRODUCT CAMPAIGN BULLETIN WILL REQUIRE A "CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL". EACH LABEL PROVIDES A SPACE TO INCLUDE THE CAMPAIGN NUMBER AND THE FIVE (5) DIGIT DEALER CODE OF THE DEALER PERFORMING THE CAMPAIGN SERVICE. THIS INFORMATION MAY BE INSERTED WITH A TYPEWRITER OR A BALL POINT PEN.
EACH "CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL" IS TO BE LOCATED ON THE RADIATOR CORE SUPPORT IN AN AREA WHICH WILL BE VISIBLE WHEN THE VEHICLE IS BROUGHT IN FOR PERIODIC SERVICING BY THE OWNER. ADDITIONAL "CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABELS" CAN BE OBTAINED FROM DAC.
APPLY "CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL" ONLY ON A CLEAN, DRY SURFACE.
