AUTOMATIC SELT BELT SERVICE REPLACEMENT

THE AUTOMATIC SEAT BELT SYSTEM OFFERED ON 1980 AND 1981 CHEVROLET CHEVETTES HAS BEEN REDESIGNED TO PERMIT FIELD SERVICE REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT OF THE LAP-SHOULDER BELT ASSEMBLY, INCLUDING THE JUNCTION RING ASSEMBLY (FIGURE 1). LAP AND SHOULDER BELTS, INCLUDING JUNCTION RING, ARE PREPACKAGED AND AVAILABLE IN COLORS THROUGH GENERAL MOTORS PARTS DIVISION. TO REMOVE AND REPLACE THE LAP AND SHOULDER BELT ASSEMBLY PERFORM THE FOLLOWING: 1.ON DOOR UPPER FRAME, SLIDE PLASTIC COVER OFF ANCHOR PLATE. REMOVE HALF-MOON NYLON RETAINER AND REMOVE LAP-SHOULDER BELT LATCH FROM ANCHOR PLATE ASSEMBLY (FIGURE 2). 2.REMOVE LAP-SHOULDER BELT FROM EMERGENCY BUCKLE AT FRONT DOOR LOWER (FIGURE 1). 3.PULL LAP-SHOULDER BELT WEBBING ALL THE WAY OUT FROM CENTER-MOUNTED RETRACTOR. TIE A KNOT IN RETRACTOR BELT WEBBING BETWEEN RETRACTOR AND JUNCTION RING (APPROXIMATELY 152 MM (6") FROM THE RETRACTOR). THIS WILL PREVENT BELT WEBBING FROM PULLING BACK INTO RETRACTOR ASSEMBLY (FIGURE 3). 4.ON 1980 STYLES, DRILL OUT RIVET IN JUNCTION RING COVER. ON 1981 STYLES, REMOVE RETAINING SCREW (FIGURE 4). 5.SLIDE PLASTIC COVER OUT FROM PIN-SPRING HOUSING ASSEMBLY. 6.RELEASE RETAINER RING FROM HOUSING. 7.DISASSEMBLE SPRING FROM PIN AND REMOVE. 8.DISCARD ORIGINAL LAP-SHOULDER BELT ASSEMBLY AND REPLACE WITH NEW SERVICE PART KIT. 9.TO INSTALL, REVERSE REMOVAL PROCEDURES. General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
