SOME EARLY PRODUCTION CHEVETTES MAY EXPERIENCE ROUGH ENGINE OPERATION DURING WARM-UP. THIS CONDITION MAY BE THE RESULT OF AN IMPROPERLY ROUTED BROWN LOOP OF WIRE WITHIN THE DISTRIBUTOR. IF THE LOOP OF BROWN WIRE AROUND THE DISTRIBUTOR PICKUP COIL HAS NOT BEEN PULLED TIGHT THROUGH THE STRAIN RELIEF, IT CAN RIDE UP AROUND THE OD OF THE PICKUP COIL ASSEMBLY CAUSING ROUGH COLD ENGINE OPERATION. IF DIAGNOSIS CONFIRMS THAT CONDITION IS THE RESULT OF DISTRIBUTOR MISFIRE, THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE SHOULD BE ADHERED TO: (A SCOPE OR TACH IS RECOMMENDED FOR DIAGNOSIS. TACH READING WILL BE HIGH AND ERRATIC IF MISFIRING IS PRESENT). AFFECTED VEHICLES WERE PRODUCED PRIOR TO THE FOLLOWING VIN'S: 1G1AB6895BA127563 LAKEWOOD 1G1AB0892BY148178 WILMINGTON SERVICE PROCEDURE 1.RAISE VEHICLE ON HOIST. 2.WITHOUT DISASSEMBLY OF DISTRIBUTOR, LOCATE THE PINK AND BROWN WIRES EXITING THROUGH THE STRAIN RELIEF AT THE REAR OF THE DISTRIBUTOR AND REMOVE PLASTIC TIE. GENTLY PULL THE BROWN WIRE TIGHT. THIS SHOULD SLIDE THE WIRE DOWN BELOW THE PICKUP COIL WITHIN THE DISTRIBUTOR. 3.INSTALL NEW PLASTIC TIE (AGAINST DISTRIBUTOR) AROUND PINK AND BROWN WIRES TO HOLD BROWN WIRE TIGHT. IF, AFTER PULLING BROWN WIRE, ENGINE CONTINUES TO MISFIRE DURING THE COLD START, THE DISTRIBUTOR CAP MUST BE REMOVED TO PROPERLY POSITION WIRE COMPLETELY AROUND AND BELOW PICKUP COIL ASSEMBLY AND SEATED AGAINST DISTRIBUTOR CASE. ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AIR CONDITIONING AND POWER STEERING, THE AIR CONDITIONING COMPRESSOR AND POWER STEERING PUMP MUST BE REMOVED TO GAIN ACCESS TO REMOVE DISTRIBUTOR CAP. THE AIR CONDITIONING HOSES DO NOT NEED TO BE REMOVED FROM COMPRESSOR. General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
