5-SPEED TRANSMISSION NEUTRAL GEAR RATTLE

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1983-85 'T' Car

Some 1983-85 'T' cars equipped with 5-speed manual transmissions (MB4) and 1.6L L4 engines (L17) may exhibit an objectionable transmission gear rattle noise when the shifter is in the neutral position and the clutch is engaged. Generally, this condition is caused by engine idle speed settings which are lower than specification.

To repair this condition use the following procedure:

1. Reset engine idle speeds to specification as outlined on the vehicle Emission Control Information Label.

2. If after resetting idle speed the rattle condition persists, replace the clutch pressure plate and driven disc with the following parts.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
