CAMPAIGN: AUTOMATIC TRANS. SHIFTER ASSEMBLY

Subject: AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SHIFTER ASSEMBLY SUPPLEMENT "A"

Models: 1983-86 Chevette and Acadian Models Equipped With Automatic Transmission

TO: ALL GENERAL MOTORS DEALERS

This bulletin is being reissued to revise the service bulletin procedure and claim information sections of product campaign bulletin 8A07 issued April 1988. All copies of original bulletin 8AO7 should be destroyed.

DEFECT INVOLVED:

General Motors of Canada has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 1983-85 and some early production 1986 Chevette and Acadian model vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission. The automatic transmission shift lever button (detent) mechanism can, over time, wear to the point that the button on the shift lever no longer needs to be depressed to shift from "Drive" to "Reverse". A lever with this condition could be inadvertently "bumped" or moved from "Drive" or "Reverse" by the driver or a passenger while the vehicle is being driven. A sudden unexpected shifting of the transmission from "Drive" to "Reverse" could cause loss of vehicle control and a vehicle crash could occur.

To prevent this condition from occurring, the automatic transmission shift lever will be replaced with a newly designed lever on all involved vehicles.

VEHICLES INVOLVED:

Involved are certain 1983-1985 and some 1986 Chevette and Acadian models equipped with an automatic transmission, as follows:

Chevette 1983 SOP EOP 1984 SOP EOP 1985 SOP EOP 1986 SOP GA146061

Acadian 1983 SOP EOP 1984 SOP EOP 1985 SOP EOP 1986 SOP GA210323

All affected vehicles have been identified by the VIN listing provided to involved Dealers with this bulletin. Any Dealer not receiving a listing was not shipped any of the affected vehicles.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
