1. Disconnect the battery negative cable from the battery. Refer to Battery Replacement in Engine Electrical.
2. Remove the crankshaft balancer from the crankshaft. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .
3. Remove the water pump from the engine block. Refer to Water Pump Replacement in Engine Cooling.
4. Remove the oil pan from the engine block. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement .
5. Remove the engine front cover bolts.

Important:  Use care as not to distort the engine front cover.

6. Remove the engine front cover by carefully prying the front cover off with a screwdriver.
7. Remove the engine front cover gasket.
8. Remove the crankshaft front cover oil seal from the engine front cover.
9. Clean the old gasket from the front cover and the block.
10. Clean and inspect the all sealing surfaces.

1. Coat the crankshaft front oil seal lips with clean engine oil.
2. Use the J 22102 to install the crankshaft front oil seal.



3. Install the front cover gasket to the engine.
4. Install the front cover to the engine.

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

5. Install the bolt to the front cover.

Tighten
Tighten the front cover bolt to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

6. Install the oil pan to the engine block. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement .
7. Install the water pump to the engine block. Refer to Water Pump Replacement in Engine Cooling.
8. Install the crankshaft balancer on the crankshaft. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .
9. Connect the battery negative cable to the battery. Refer to Battery Replacement in Engine Electrical.
