Removal Procedure
- Remove the air compressor,
if equipped. Refer to
Air Compressor Replacement
in Air Compressor.
Important: Twist the spark plug boot one-half turn in order to release the boot.
Pull on the spark plug boot only. Do not pull on the spark plug wire or the
wire could be damaged.
- Remove the spark plug wires from the spark plugs and ignition coils.
- Disconnect the connector
position assurance (CPA) retainer.
- Disconnect the ignition coil harness lead (2). Reposition the
lead.
- Remove the valve rocker
arm cover bolts.
- Remove the valve rocker arm cover.
Important: The valve rocker arm cover gasket may be reused if not removed from
the cover.
- Inspect the valve rocker arm cover gasket for cuts or damage.
- Clean and inspect the valve rocker arm cover. Refer to
Valve Rocker Arm Cover Cleaning and Inspection
in the Engine Unit Repair.
Installation Procedure
- Install a new valve rocker
arm cover gasket if the gasket was removed from the rocker arm cover.
- Install the valve rocker arm cover.
- Install the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Tighten the valve
rocker arm cover bolts in sequence using 2 passes as shown.
Tighten
- Tighten the valve rocker arm cover bolts to 6 N·m
(53 lb in) a first pass.
- Tighten the valve rocker arm cover bolts to 12 N·m
(106 lb in) a final pass.
- Position and connect the
ignition coil harness lead (2).
- Connect the CPA retainer.
Important: Fully install the spark plug wire by pushing on the exposed end of the
spark plug boot. Do not push the spark plug wire on to the spark plug by using
the metal heat shield.
- Install the spark plug wires to the spark plugs and ignition coils.
- Install the air compressor, if equipped. Refer to
Air Compressor Replacement
in Air Compressor.
