Run the engine at a normal idle with the transmission in neutral and the clutch disengaged. Shift the transmission into reverse and check for a grinding noise. If you hear a grinding noise, check the clutch system and clutch controls for damage or wear. Refer to Clutch Rattle in Clutch.

If you cannot shift the transmission, perform the following steps:

  1. Inspect the transmission for the following conditions:

    • Wear
    • Damage to the shift cables
    • Damage to the mounting brackets

If the clutch system and transmission shifting controls are operational, refer to Transmission Jumps Out of Gear .
