Front Stabilizer Shaft Mounting Stud Breakage (Install New Stud/Bolt and Nut)

Condition

Some drivers may comment that the front stabilizer shaft mounting studs are breaking.

Correction

To correct this condition, remove the broken stud(s). Install new stud and nut and/or new bolt and nut; depending on which stud is broken. Use the appropriate procedure listed below. If both studs are found to be broken, replace with two new studs. If just the rear stud is broken, replace with a bolt and nut. Use the part numbers listed below.

Stud Replacement (Front Only or Both Studs Broken)

  1. Due to insufficient clearance at the spring eye, the front spring assembly needs to be removed. Refer to the Leaf Spring Replacement in the Front Suspension subsection of the appropriate Service Manual.
  2. Remove the front broken stud(s) (1) using a hammer and center punch.
  3. Install the new stud(s), P/N 12477901.
  4. Install the front spring assembly. Refer to the Leaf Spring Replacement in the Front Suspension subsection of the appropriate Service Manual.
  5. Install a new nut, P/N 12477923, to the stud.

    6. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 200 N·m (147 lb ft).

Stud Replacement (Rear Stud Broken)
  1. Remove the rear broken stud (2) using a hammer and center punch.
  2. Install a new bolt, P/N 09430878, a washer, P/N 00131016, and a nut, P/N 09442942. Install these from the bottom side up, opposite of the original stud.

    3. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 200 N·m (147 lb ft).

  3. Verify that there is adequate clearance between the bolt and the main leaf spring. There should be no interference with the spring.
