Starter Replacement L18

Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
2. Raise and suitably support the vehicle with safety stands. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
3. Remove the positive cable nut.
4. Remove the positive cable from the starter.



5. Remove the engine harness nut.
6. Remove the engine harness from the starter.



7. Remove the starter motor bolts.
8. Remove the starter.



9. Remove the starter heat shield bolts, nut and shield, if necessary.

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

1. Install the starter heat shield, nut and bolts if necessary.

Tighten

•	Tighten the starter heat shield bolts to 3 N·m (35 lb in).

•	Tighten the starter heat shield nut to 5 N·m (44 lb in).




2. Install the starter motor bolts.

Tighten
Tighten the starter motor bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).




3. Install the engine harness to the starter.
4. Install the engine harness nut.

Tighten
Tighten the engine harness nut to 2 N·m (18 lb in).




5. Install the positive cable to the starter.
6. Install the positive cable nut.

Tighten
Tighten the positive cable nut to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

7. Lower the vehicle.
8. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .

Starter Replacement L65

1. Disconnect the batteries negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
2. Raise the vehicle and support with suitable safety stands. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
3. Disconnect the battery positive cable and the wiring harness from the starter.



4. Remove the starter mounting bolts and washers.
5. Remove the bracket nut and washer.
6. Remove the starter. A starter shield bolts to the engine.

1. Install the starter to the engine.

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. 2. Install the bracket nut and washer to the bracket over the end of the starter.

Tighten
Tighten the bracket nut to 8 N·m (6 lb ft).




3. Install the starter mounting bolts and washers, if equipped, through the starter to the engine.

Tighten
Tighten the starter mounting through bolts to 45 N·m (35 lb ft).

4. Connect the battery positive cable and the wiring harness to the starter.

Tighten
Tighten the nut to 11 N·m (100 lb in).

5. Remove the stands and lower the vehicle.
6. Connect the batteries negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
