Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 156638  Size: SH
  1. Release the park brake.
  2. Raise the vehicle and support the vehicle with safety stands. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. Remove the drum. Refer to Propeller Shaft Parking Brake Drum Replacement .
  4. Release the tension from the index lever by unhooking the spring from the index lever.
  5. Remove the transmission yoke bolt (automatic transmission) or nut (manual transmission).
  6. Pull out on the transmission yoke to remove it from the transmission.
  7. Remove the support plate bolts and washers.
  8. Remove the backing plate, support plate, index lever and spring, and park brake shoe assembly from the vehicle.

  10. Separate the support plate and the park brake shoe assembly from the backing plate.
  11. Remove the park brake shoe retaining springs.

  12. Object Number: 156628  Size: SH
  13. Remove the park brake shoes.
  14. Inspect the springs for signs of wear or excessive heat. Replace as needed.
  15. Inspect the support plate friction points for wear. Replace if wear is excessive.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 156628  Size: SH
  1. Install the park brake shoes to the support plate.

  2. Object Number: 156625  Size: SH
  3. Connect the park brake shoe retaining springs.
  4. Install the support plate and park brake shoe assembly to the backing plate.
  5. Install the index lever and spring assembly between the shoes.

  6. Object Number: 156641  Size: SH
  7. Install the backing plate, support plate, index lever and spring, and park brake shoe assembly to the vehicle.
  8. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  9. Install the support plate washers and bolts.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 105 N·m (77 lb ft).

  11. Install the tension arm of the spring to the index lever.
  12. Install the transmission yoke to the transmission.
  13. Install the transmission yoke bolt (automatic transmission) or nut (manual transmission).
  14. Tighten

        • Tighten the bolt to 122 N·m (90 lb ft).
        • Tighten the nut to 475 N·m (350 lb ft).
  15. Install the drum. Refer to Propeller Shaft Parking Brake Drum Replacement .
  16. Adjust the park brake. Refer to Park Brake Adjustment .
