System Component Description

The park brake system consists of the following:

Park Brake Pedal Assembly: Receives and transfers park brake system apply input force from driver to park brake cable system.

Park Brake Release Handle Assembly: Releases applied park brake system when pulled.

Park Brake Cable: Transfers input force received from park brake pedal, through park brake cable clevis, to park brake apply lever.

Park Brake Cable Clevis: Threaded park brake cable clevis is used to remove slack in park brake cable.

Park Brake Apply Lever: Multiplies and uses input force from the park brake cable/clevis to expand park brake shoes toward the friction surface of the park brake drum.

Park Brake Shoes: Applies mechanical output force from park brake lever to friction surface of the park brake drum.

System Operation

Park brake apply input force is received by the park brake pedal assembly being depressed, transferred through the park brake cable and the park brake cable clevis to the park brake apply lever. The park brake apply lever multiplies and uses the apply input force to expand the park brake shoes toward the friction surface of the park brake drum in order to prevent the rotation of the propeller shaft system, which will in turn prevent the rotation of the rear drive axle. The park brake release handle assembly releases an applied park brake system when it is pulled reward.
