Diagnostic Aids

Inspect the clutch pedal for a loose or worn clutch pedal spring. If the clutch pedal stays to the floor you should check the master cylinder for proper fluid level or faulty parts. Also check the hydraulic hoses or pipes for damage or even leaks. Inspect the clutch diaphragm springs to see if they are broken.

  2. This step inspects the hydraulic lines for kinks, dents or other damage.

  3. This step inspects for the correct fluid level in the reservoir.

  4. This step inspects for a faulty release bearing.

Inspect to see of the master cylinder pushrod has fallen off the clutch pedal.

Has the master cylinder pushrod fallen off the clutch pedal?

Inspect the clutch hydraulic line.

Is the hydraulic line bursting or leaking?

Correctly install the master cylinder pushrod. Refer to Master Cylinder Replacement .

Does the clutch pedal still stay on the floor when disengaged?

If the vehicle is equipped with the ZF S6-650, you must manually pull the clutch pedal back, there is no return spring on this assembly.

Inspect the reservoir for fluid.

Is there fluid in the reservoir?

Go to Step 7

Fill the reservoir with fluid.

Does the clutch pedal still stay on the floor when disengaged?

Go to Step 7

  1. Remove the transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Manual Transmission NV-4500.
  2. Inspect the clutch release bearing in the concentric slave cylinder for binding.

Is there binding on the clutch release bearing?

Go to Step 8

Free up the clutch release bearing or replace the clutch release bearing. Refer to Clutch Concentric Actuator Cylinder Replacement .

Does the clutch pedal still stay on the floor when disengaged?

Go to Step 9

System OK

Inspect the master cylinder.

Inspect the master cylinder and the quick connect fitting for leaks.

Is the master cylinder faulty?

Go to Step 10

System OK

Replace the master cylinder. Refer to Master Cylinder Replacement .

Did you find and repair the condition?

Go to Step 11

  1. Install the transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Manual Transmission NV-4500.
  2. Operate the system in order to verify the repair.
