Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement L65

Tools Required

J 39400-A Halogen Leak Detector

Removal Procedure

  1. Recover the refrigerant from the system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .

  2. Object Number: 573938  Size: SH
  3. Disconnect the electrical connector from the coil (1).
  4. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 6.5L.

  5. Object Number: 573960  Size: SH
  6. Disconnect the electrical connector from the A/C compressor high pressure cutoff switch (2).

  7. Object Number: 573934  Size: SH
  8. Remove the compressor and condenser hose bolt (3) from the compressor.
  9. Remove the seal washers from the compressor hose assembly.
  10. Remove the compressor brace bolts and the nuts.
  11. Remove the compressor brace.
  12. Remove the compressor bolts (4).
  13. Remove the compressor from the vehicle.
  14. If replacing the A/C compressor, drain and measure as much of the oil as possible from the removed compressor .
  15. 11.1. Drain the oil from both the suction and discharge ports of the removed A/C compressor into a clean container.
    11.2. Remove the A/C compressor crankcase oil drain plug and drain the crankcase oil into the same container.
    11.3. Measure and record the amount of oil drained from the removed A/C compressor.

    This measurement will be used during installation of the replacement A/C compressor.

    11.4. Properly discard the used PAG oil.

Installation Procedure

  1. Add the proper amount of PAG oil to the compressor crankcase. Refer to Refrigerant System Capacities
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the A/C compressor drain plug.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the drain plug to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  5. Install the compressor to the vehicle.

  7. Install the compressor bolts (4).
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  9. Install the compressor braces.
  10. Install the compressor brace bolts.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  12. Install the bolt to the generator bracket.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  14. Install the seal washers to the compressor hose assembly.
  15. Install the compressor and condenser hose bolt (3) to the compressor.
  16. Tighten
    The bolt to 34 N·m (25 lb ft).

  17. Connect the electrical connector to the A/C compressor high pressure cutoff switch (2).
  18. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 6.5L.

  19. Object Number: 573938  Size: SH
  20. Connect the electrical connectors to the coil (1).
  21. Evacuate and recharge the refrigerant system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  22. Leak test the fittings of the component using the J 39400-A .

Removal Procedure

  1. Recover the refrigerant from the system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .

  3. Disconnect the electrical connector from the coil (1).
  4. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 8.1L.

  5. Object Number: 573960  Size: SH
  6. Disconnect the electrical connector from the A/C compressor high pressure cutoff switch (2).

  7. Object Number: 573934  Size: SH
  8. Remove the compressor hose assembly bolt (3) from the compressor.
  9. Remove the seal washer from the compressor hose assembly.
  10. Remove the compressor bolts (4).
  11. Remove the compressor from the vehicle.
  12. If replacing the A/C compressor, drain and measure as much of the oil as possible from the removed compressor .
  13. 9.1. Drain the oil from both the suction and discharge ports of the removed A/C compressor into a clean container.
    9.2. Remove the A/C compressor crankcase oil drain plug and drain the crankcase oil into the same container.
    9.3. Measure and record the amount of oil drained from the removed A/C compressor.

    This measurement will be used during installation of the replacement A/C compressor.

    9.4. Properly discard the used PAG oil.

    Tighten the drain plug to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  5. Install the compressor to the vehicle.

  7. Install the compressor bolts (4).
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  9. Install the seal washers to the compressor hose assembly .
  10. Install the compressor hose assembly bolt (3) to the compressor.
  11. Tighten
    The bolt to 35 N·m (26 lb ft).

  12. Connect the electrical connector to the A/C compressor high pressure cutoff switch (2).
  13. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 8.1L.

  14. Object Number: 573938  Size: SH
  15. Connect the electrical connector to the coil (1).
  16. Evacuate and recharge the refrigerant system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  17. Leak test the fittings of the component using the J 39400-A .
