J 43218 Clamp Pliers

Important: Observe and accurately reference mark all driveline components relative to the propeller shaft and axles before disassembly. These components include the propeller shafts, drive axles, pinion flanges, output shafts, etc. All components must be reassembled in the exact relationship to each other as they were when removed. In addition, published specifications and torque values, as well as any measurements made prior to disassembly must be followed.

1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
2. Reference mark the rear propeller shaft to the rear axle pinion yoke.
3. Support the rear propeller shaft.



4. Remove the bolts and the yoke retainers from the rear axle pinion yoke.
5. Remove the clamps securing the boot to the intermediate propeller shaft and the rear propeller shaft slip yoke by prying up on the exposed end of the clamp using a flat bladed tool.
6. Disconnect the boot from the rear propeller shaft.
7. Slide the rear propeller shaft forward in order to disconnect the propeller shaft from the rear axle pinion yoke.
8. Tape the bearing cups in order to prevent the loss of bearing rollers.
9. Slide the rear propeller shaft rearward in order to disconnect the propeller shaft from the intermediate propeller shaft stub shaft.
10. Remove the rear propeller shaft.
11. Reference mark the intermediate propeller shaft to the front propeller shaft yoke.
12. Support the intermediate propeller shaft.
13. Remove the nuts, the bolts, and the washers from the intermediate propeller shaft center bearing support.
14. Remove the intermediate propeller shaft center bearing from the hanger.
15. Remove the bolts and the yoke retainers from the intermediate propeller shaft yoke.
16. Tape the bearing cups in order to prevent the loss of bearing rollers.
17. Remove the intermediate propeller shaft.
18. Support the front propeller shaft.
19. Reference mark the front propeller shaft to the transmission yoke.
20. Remove the nuts, the bolts, and the washers from the front propeller shaft center bearing support.
21. Tape the bearing cups in order to prevent the loss of bearing rollers.
22. Remove the front propeller shaft center bearing support from the hanger.



23. Remove the bolts and the yoke retainers from the front propeller shaft yoke.
24. Remove the front propeller shaft.

1. Install the front propeller shaft to the transmission yoke.

Align the reference marks made during removal.

2. Support the front propeller shaft.




Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

3. Install the yoke retainers and the bolts.

Tighten
Tighten the yoke retainer bolts to 37 N·m (27 lb ft).

Important: The center bearing must be aligned in order to prevent damage to the propeller shaft assembly. When bolting the center bearing in place, be sure to keep the center bearing perpendicular (89-91 degrees) to the propeller shaft.

4. Install the front propeller shaft center bearing to the hanger.
5. Install the center bearing support bolts, the washers, and the nuts.

Tighten
Tighten the center bearing support nuts to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

6. Support the intermediate propeller shaft.
7. Install the intermediate propeller shaft to the front propeller shaft pinion yoke.

Align the marks made during removal.

8. Install the yoke retainers and the bolts.

Tighten
Tighten the yoke retainer bolts to 37 N·m (27 lb ft).

Important: The center bearing must be aligned in order to prevent damage to the propeller shaft assembly. When bolting the center bearing in place, be sure to keep the center bearing perpendicular (89-91 degrees) to the propeller shaft.

9. Install the intermediate propeller shaft center bearing to the hanger.
10. Install the center bearing support bolts, the washers, and the nuts.

Tighten
Tighten the center bearing support nuts to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

11. Inspect the splines of the intermediate propeller shaft stub shaft for a sufficient amount of grease. If the splines of the stub shaft does not have a sufficient amount of grease, lubricate the shaft with chassis grease (GM P/N 12377985 or equivalent).
12. Install the boot and two new clamps onto the intermediate propeller shaft stub shaft.
13. Install the rear propeller shaft to the intermediate propeller shaft stub shaft.

Snap the boot into the grooves on the intermediate propeller shaft and the rear propeller shaft.

14. Support the rear propeller shaft.
15. Install the rear propeller shaft to the rear axle pinion yoke.

Align the marks made during removal.

16. Install the yoke retainers and the bolts.

Tighten
Tighten the yoke retainer bolts to 37 N·m (27 lb ft).




17. Using the J 43218 , crimp the boot clamps until the dimensions are obtained.
18. Lower the vehicle.
