Removal Procedure

Important: Do not raise the engine by the crankshaft balancer to perform this service procedure. Damage to the crankshaft balancer or the crankshaft may occur.

  1. Drain the engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
  2. Remove the oil level indicator tube. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement .
  3. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  4. Remove the catalytic converter. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  5. Remove the torque converter cover bolts.
  6. Remove the torque converter cover.

  8. Remove the battery cable ground bolt at the lower front of the engine block.
  9. Reposition the cable.
  10. Remove the transmission oil cooler line bracket bolt.
  11. Disconnect the knock sensor electrical connector.
  12. Reposition the knock sensor harness.

  14. Remove the oil pan bolts.

  15. Object Number: 635654  Size: SH

    Important: The oil pan gasket is reusable if not cut or damaged.

  16. Remove the oil pan (1) and gasket (2).

Installation Procedure

Important: The oil pan must be installed within 5 minutes of the sealer being applied or the sealer will begin to cure, causing an inadequate seal.

  1. Apply sealant GM U.S. P/N 12346286, Canada P/N 10953472, to the side of the front (1) and rear (2) crankshaft bearing caps, on both the left and right sides (4 locations total).

  2. Object Number: 635654  Size: SH
  3. Install a NEW oil pan gasket (2) into the oil pan groove, if required.
  4. Install the oil pan (1).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6. Install the oil pan bolts.
  7. Tighten

    1. Tighten the oil bolts in sequence a first pass to 10 N·m (89 lb in).
    2. Tighten the oil bolts in sequence a final pass to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  8. Position the knock sensor harness.
  9. Connect the knock sensor electrical connector.
  10. Install the transmission oil cooler line bracket bolt.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the transmission oil cooler line bracket bolt to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  12. Position the cable.
  13. Install the battery cable ground bolt at the lower front of the engine block.
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the battery cable ground bolt to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  15. Install the torque converter cover.
  16. Install the torque converter cover bolts.
  17. Tighten
    Tighten the torque converter cover bolts to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  18. Install the catalytic converter. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  19. Install the starter. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  20. Install the oil level indicator. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement .
  21. Fill the engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
